Guys, don't know where to talk about this, wife is tired of listening to my band's "stories"... My kids too...
So let me just vent...
My main reasons to play music in a band (no special order): have fun, learn tunes that I like and challenge myself at doing it, play LOUD and have a good reason to keep spending money on gear!
But lately, I don't feel like I fit in. I'm feeling too old for being in a band. I'm 46, been back in bands since around 15 years. Had stopped years ago for the kids and all other related things that comes with them.
Anyway, I'm with this band since 2009. The 5 members lineup has changed quite a lot (mostly drummers!!!) and we're only 2 from the original outfit. Average age of the band members, late 30s, there is even a guy with the same age as I am.
Strike 1:
So these days, picking a new song to learn or play together is practicaly impossible. So we just rehearse the same old crap, when we finaly find a time that matches everyone schedule... New drummer (since June) still don't know all the tunes...
Strike 2:
Guys wanted to do a promo video. So we did. Nice place and OK setup. We recorded some audio tracks but finishing the mixes and mastering is requiring extra-political-correctness so you don't offend anyone. Your doing your best to make it sound musical but someone's is always complaining about something...
After over 4 weeks, nothing has been really finished.
Strike 3:
Also, now they want to participate in a battle of the band at a local bar. Playing a Thursday night. Carrying all your gear for a one hour set (no backline). Having to pay like 20$ of parking as it's not easy to find a place to park your car in that area. As I already went to that same place twice with previous bands, it's practicaly empty on those nights. And not to burst the bubble of the guys but we're old and fat... We're going to compete with band's the age of my kids... And the singer carries a binder with the lyrics as he still doesn't know all them...
I could go on and on...
Do I ask for too much?
-------------
In the past I tried many times to try to discuss about it. These days, I just shut up and play! I'll be doing the Battle of the bands gig, to fit in, but I'm really thinking quitting soon (something I wonder if I shouldn't have done it earlier).
Next step would be to build that acoustic room (I've been dreaming of) and just jam with my son (who's getting way better at the drums).
Feel free to share comments or your own experience.
And sorry for the book! lol And thanks for letting me vent. Re-lol
