  • The Weird Global Appeal of Heavy Metal

behind a paywall, but worth a read if you want to pick up today's WSJ.

Basically makes the point that as economies grow, like "mushrooms after the rain", metal scenes appear.

I did not know that the President of Indonesia wears Napalm Death and Metallica shirts. The fact that he does makes me feel a little better about the world.

"In late August, Sony Music Entertainment bought Century Media Records,"

Well, there goes another money-grab. Turns out CM was in it for the money and not for helping artists/bands. I can imagine Sony keeps tight oversight to make sure they sign what's trending, and that new acts are playing what's selling, just like every other label and every other genre.
