When i learned guitar, there was no such thing as tab, so i learned to read from the Mel Bay books my teacher was using at the time. I like standard notation, as it forces me to come up with my own fingerings as i'm learning something, but back in the 80's i learned tons of stuff from the tabs in GFTPM magazine.

      A little off topic..
GFTPM - YES! I still have stacks of those old issues. The explanation of songs they tabbed were as detailed as the tabs themselves. I also liked the graphics they included that showed you what pedals to use and the knob settings. I still go back and look at tabs and enjoy the old ads. ADA was usually on the back cover.
