Guitars For a toddler (3yo)

So my nephew is turning 3, and his parents want to start him early/young on an instrument.

I'm thinking get him started on guitar. Any suggestions of a guitar or any other kind of stringed instrument?

I'd look at a ukulele. They can be bought cheaply so it won't hurt as much if the kid decides to use it to hammer nails instead. I think most guitar bodies will be too big and necks too long for a 3yo, even half size ones
