It's becoming one of the hottest -- and most addictive -- sites on the Internet: a man dressed in a chicken costume who obeys your every command.

And the remarkable thing about this site is that it's designed to sell chicken sandwiches for Burger King, but you'd be hard-pressed to see any corporate logos on display. Instead, the site -- at www.sub servientchicken.com -- is looking to use its subtlety and humor to hook its customers.

"The site is geared to reach out to the 20- and 30-year-olds that are difficult to reach with traditional advertising," said Blake Lewis, a spokesman for the Miami-based chain. "We are aware that this group responds to edgy, hip and very unusual advertising."

AT YOUR COMMAND
The chicken site accomplishes all three of those things -- not to mention being a bit creepy.

The site incorporates Flash-powered technology that allows the user to type in commands and watch the chicken -- an actor in a chicken outfit with a garter belt and an ankle bracelet -- act them out. There are hundreds of commands the chicken will respond to -- from Riverdancing to laying an egg to licking its toes.

The site looks like one of the many Web cam porn sites where a user can type in a command and a person on the screen will follow it. There are even beefcake photos of the chicken.

But producers of the BK site stopped short of allowing any pornographic acts.

Ask the chicken to do a lewd act and it will walk up to the camera and wag a scolding finger.

Launched April 7, the site hit the top of one Internet tracking service last week and it's already gotten about 20 million hits.

Most of the traffic comes from word of mouth, Lewis said. There is also a TV ad campaign with the chicken that flashes the Web address at the end.

The only reference to Burger King in the online campaign is when the page is loading and a Burger King logo appears on the screen. There is also a small button on the page that links the user to information about the BK Tendercrisp.

"If you look at the audience we are trying to reach, you need to be very hip," Lewis said. "Plaster a logo on the screen, and you lose that hip factor."

So what's the relationship to the chicken sandwich and the do-all chicken?

"We want to convey that you can have your chicken your way," Lewis said.
