Is the planet really that fucked up?
In short: yes. The moderately longer answer lies in the old truism that, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." The UN is accountable to no one, they're not elected and those running the show all hold diplomatic credentials that give them complete immunity from responsibility for their actions. Hence all of the necessary checks and balances to prevent this sort of thing do not exist.

I have to agree with that. When you think about it, it is quite strange that the organization that is meant to make the world a better place is not a democratic institution.

In addition, it's not even a peace organization. If you look at the UN's history, it can be categorized as a WAR organization.

Whatever it might be, one thing's certain: the UN has far outlived its utility (to the extent that it ever had any).

Hmmm ... maybe this hasn't gotten much press because Saddam was using the UN oil-for-food program to bribe the press as well. I'd say that I was shocked but ....

Re: U.N. OIL PAPERS VANISH

There's a limit to diplomatic immunity; after all, you could say that Slobodan Milosevich and Saddam Hussein had diplomatic immunity as presidents of their countries, but they got arrested.

These crooks, including Kofi Annan, should be arrested for these crimes. If not, why have a UN that's so blatantly crooked at all? Better to pursue a policy in the interests of the USA than to let the crooks rule the castle!

Diplomatic immunity should not let you get away with murder either. Parking tickets I can see, especially in NYC, but when an embassy staff person can rape, maim, and/or kill and has no penalty other than to go back to the homeland, that is ridiculous.

Hey! What if one of OUR diplomats shoots THEIR criminal diplomat,
then is freed due to diplomatic immunity?
Sounds like a win/win to me!
