From the 'Souls site...

On the recent Anchors Aweigh tour in Europe, we partied with a group if G.I.'s, stationed in Germany, who came to our show. We learned that this group of kids were all punk rockers, Souls kids like we meet at every other show. We talked about how this war is bullshit, and they shared some of their experiences. Signed on as chefs or mechanics, most of them were almost done with their four years, but were being 'kept' for an extra year (no choice, no 'overtime') and being shipped to Iraq "to clear buildings". We just heard form one of these kids, thought we'd share:
Hello K8, I am one of the boys that came to the Shwienfert, Germany show. My friends snuck across the border to watch the Souls in Cheq. We have been in Iraq for a Few months now and the outside world is seeming more distant everyday. We finally got a stereo off an Arab peddler in downtown Baq'uba and have heard music in the open air. It was a no question vote that the Souls would be the first CD to spin. Amazing what it does for morale. Even soldiers who never heard (SOUL VIRGINS) where bouncing. I want to thank you and the guys for being so down to earth and treating us with the respect that we give you. I have spoken to many bands back stage or in a bar and I have tuned out many because they really could give a shit about their fans.
We have a hard road ahead of us and already have had to deal with dead friends and killing Iraqis. We are all victims in this side-less war and have no business here. The look in a child's eye when his father is humiliated by soldiers or the look in a fathers eye when we just accidentally killed his only child is going to stick with me forever. Having to take part in a twenty-one gun salute to bury an 18 year old boy straight out of high school is to much to bear. We tell each other things will be alright and that we will have beers when we go home a year from now. It is a false sense of security. We are killing and being killed everyday. If you can just ask your friends to try. Do what they can for us here in the zone. We need to bring the boys home. All the guys here have no interest in the political agenda and are here for the wrong reasons. They have been conned into it for college money or because they were in a tight spot at home. We've all been freedom fighters since we've signed in, fighting for are own freedom. Thanks for listening and we will too, rEPp
