• Another perspective on the war in Iraq

From the 'Souls site...
-----------------------------------------------

April 5, 2004
On the recent Anchors Aweigh tour in Europe, we partied with a group if G.I.'s, stationed in Germany, who came to our show. We learned that this group of kids were all punk rockers, Souls kids like we meet at every other show. We talked about how this war is bullshit, and they shared some of their experiences. Signed on as chefs or mechanics, most of them were almost done with their four years, but were being 'kept' for an extra year (no choice, no 'overtime') and being shipped to Iraq "to clear buildings". We just heard form one of these kids, thought we'd share:

Hello K8, I am one of the boys that came to the Shwienfert, Germany show. My friends snuck across the border to watch the Souls in Cheq. We have been in Iraq for a Few months now and the outside world is seeming more distant everyday. We finally got a stereo off an Arab peddler in downtown Baq'uba and have heard music in the open air. It was a no question vote that the Souls would be the first CD to spin. Amazing what it does for morale. Even soldiers who never heard (SOUL VIRGINS) where bouncing. I want to thank you and the guys for being so down to earth and treating us with the respect that we give you. I have spoken to many bands back stage or in a bar and I have tuned out many because they really could give a shit about their fans.
We have a hard road ahead of us and already have had to deal with dead friends and killing Iraqis. We are all victims in this side-less war and have no business here. The look in a child's eye when his father is humiliated by soldiers or the look in a fathers eye when we just accidentally killed his only child is going to stick with me forever. Having to take part in a twenty-one gun salute to bury an 18 year old boy straight out of high school is to much to bear. We tell each other things will be alright and that we will have beers when we go home a year from now. It is a false sense of security. We are killing and being killed everyday. If you can just ask your friends to try. Do what they can for us here in the zone. We need to bring the boys home. All the guys here have no interest in the political agenda and are here for the wrong reasons. They have been conned into it for college money or because they were in a tight spot at home. We've all been freedom fighters since we've signed in, fighting for are own freedom. Thanks for listening and we will too, rEPp

they tell you that long before basic training. you're given several chances to back out before you swear in. even at that, you can wash out of basic training, no harm, no foul. the sad thing is there are a lot of service people who think along similar lines. just another factor why i didn't continue.

You know when I was sworn in at the Police Ceramony ...not once did I ever think I may have to deal with real danger ...

I thought It was just to look stupid in blue and carry a gun so all my friends could look up to me as say things like ...."look at that dumbfuck , I can't belive they gave that fag a gun"..

Yeah, I thought it was all about getting the girls and looking like a badass with a gun, till I found out they expected you to actually DO something

Whiner. Yes it's quickly turning into a Political Agenda more than ever, just like VietNam. If they'd let the soldiers flatten the Mosques (which, in case you bleeding-hearts haven't figured out yet, is where the insurgents are gathering and planning), the war would be over in a few short weeks, and there'd be a stable Civilian Government in place.

You have to fight on THEIR terms, not Traditional U.S.A. West Point/Washington DC/UN/Greenpiss/ACLU terms. If the soldiers had any sense they'd "accidentally" tank-and-mortar a few Mosques and make their deepest snickering apologies to CNN, despite the orders from the Spin Doctors.

How fucking dare you sit behind your keyboards in your homes and mock our armed forces? This is the sort of ignorant bullshit that drove me from this board in the first place. You sit in your armchairs and critique what you have no fucking understanding of. Very few members of this board have served in the armed forces, myself being one of them. You never see us trash the armed forces. Your lack of respect for our servicemen is fucking appaling. You call yourselves patriots? Why don't you walk around waiting to fucking die and see how it makes you cowards feel. Of course Bill is no coward, he's just salty, but the rest of you people bashing my brothers in arms should take a fucking look in the mirror and see what the fuck YOU are made of before insulting the boys that you gladly send off to die.

give it a rest, this is the kind of arrogant BS that makes people hate service people. no one owes us anything. we did it cause we wanted to. to expect anything in return is immature. to call someone unpatriotic for disliking the armed forces boggles my mind. "the people" do not the send the "boys" off to die.
i'm assuming you read what the alleged serviceman said in the above statements. he was whining because he acutally had to do what he knew there was a slight possibility of when he signed up. that's like a cop whining cause he has to make an arrest. i think it's probably BS but you never know, i knew a lot of jarheads who thought along the same lines.

Ace, I personally don't see the attack that you see. I see a young punk who signed up for what ever reason crying over the fact that he has to do his duty. No one has slammed the armed forces on this board. I have been on here almost 2 years and everyone has always had positive thing to say about our military, and its people. Whether you signed up for a skill or college money it is the MILITARY you may be called on to go fight.
I spent six years in the Navy, I flew on p3s. I lost several friends in aircraft crashes and mishaps. That goes with the territory. I know that at the bottom of the recruitment contrct I signed, in bold letters "Or The Needs Of The Navy" meaning nothing that I was promised was garanteed.
