• Man, Protools is such a pain in the ass.

I just spend the last four hours recording, trying to get this song perfect sounding. Well, I realized that I screwed something up when editing a section, and now I just lost 1/2 of my nights work.

That program is so damn frustrating. When you pay to go into a studio there are people who do this detailed editing for you, right?

Damn, I need to go eat something. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

Doesn't ProTools have like 999 levels of Undo?

It does have the undo levels, but it is still possible to screw things up (especially if you are just getting used to it). For some reason it took me quite a while to get used to ProTools Le, much longer than other programs I have used.

Qbase is better, IMO. It was designed by Germans, and they made it to be an easier to understand version of protools . They rock!

Paddok,
I used the Roland-based digi-workstations for years and I became frustrated with some of the little quirks they all had. I tried ProTools out when I took a digital media class at my university. My school has a class that is pretty much specific to ProTools and walks you through the program. I'd recommend either checking with your local college (if money isn't an issue) or finding other people who have the program and ask to sit in with them so you can pick up all of the finer points. I'm going to put in a ProTools system here now that I've finally gotten rid of the Roland stuff.

For my personal studio I'm still using a four track Yamaha. Great unit, especially for just tracking parts quickly and songwriting. My mentor has the full Qbase setup and stuff, so when I'm ready for good quality recordings I go to him.

Re: Man, Protools is such a pain in the ass.

I've done a lot of recording and have used a variety of different setups to accomplish it. First was on eof those Tascam Portastudio 4-track things that you stick a cassette tape in. I busted my recording cherry on that and had a blast doing it. I recorded a nice little demo of my music on the thing and it sounded great, albeit a little "hiss-y".
Next, my former band recorded a 7 song demo using a Roland VS-880. We did it in this old as hell farmhouse I used to live in....set the whole ground level up as a recording studio....drums took up the whole living room, guitars in the dining room, control room and Roland in another room. We had only two weeks before we had to return the Roland so we worked 12+ hours a day trying to get THE sound. Turned out ok. Then we used the Tascam again and recorded the second half of the demo (a total of 14 songs between both units). The Tascam actually sounded as good as the Roland that time. I think it was because I had learned HOW to record, mix, and produce with the added practice.
Then, I bought a Roland VS-1680, high end mic-pre, AKG 4033, and about 3500 more in high end gear and we spent the next year recording our asses off. That time, it turned out great. I used every trick and technique I had learned from reading those "how to record" reference books.
But when I started recording on a ProTools setup last year, I realized that I could do so much more to make a recording sound perfect. Of course, with Protools and other digital recording medium, perfect can often mean sterile and overproduced. I'll put a Protools setup in here in the coming months...not sure which version but probably the G4/ Digi002 with the control board version. BUT, I'm going to record the guitars thru tube amps, use analog effects when I can, and try not to be too anal about x-fading, cut n paste, looping, etc. Technology is great but I think you lose the vibe of a tune when you simply record a phrase and loop it over and over for the rest of the verses, etc.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Same here. Using a line 6 pod is about as I far as I'm willing to go. I'd rather mic a real amp, I love doing that. And I always record all my playing. None of that looping crap. If I'm programming my drum track, then I'll go ahead and loop those, but any real-time instruments I want recorded as a real performance.

I'd rather hammer the song out with a band until we get it tight and right, then record it all live, then add whatever extras afterwards. Doing it this way means everyone has their parts memorized, plus it sound better to me

BUT since I don't have a band, I have to do one track at a time

I use an Akai DPS-12 and CoolEdit2000 with all the Pro plugins.

For the guys that want to know you can download all different types of software, including protools, off of Kazaa. Just look up whatever software you want and it will most likely be on there.

I use Nuendo, I like it better than ProTools. Regardless, this is what you pay a professional for, guys. A pro doesn't do things like lose 1/2 a nights work. He has procedures for doing things correctly and efficiently. If your work is important, it's worth paying someone to do it right, isn't it?
