• Just some curiosity

As I can see and read here, there are a lot of good guitarist, guitar fans, collectors, and repairmen on this forum... but in those who loves playing, Is there anyone that tried for an audition for a "major band or artist" instead for a local and not so "profesional well known" band?

Excuse me the talented musicians here, but you know what I mean... loking for fame, recognition, or to be sign by a major record label... you know...

My friend Dave Chedrick (drummer in Hangar 18, Dreams Of Damnation) auditioned for Slayer a couple years ago.

My other friend Dave Watson tried out for - and got - guitarist position in Hirax (although how major *they* are is debatable).

Well I just finished a demo ....it sounds like shit..

but we'll see what happends..

In Cleveland ALL the good local musicians know each other ...it's a small circle of freaks that are too busy or already busy doing something..

In Cleveland there is like ten great guitarist and two or three bass players and few drummers...

I just turned 40 and If I were to ever get famous it won't be for this shit...

I need a awesome bassist ...and I am one BUT ....I'm not the "bassist" in the band ...duh???

Bill, you didn't even come CLOSE to answering Morbid's question!

I guess *I* didn't either, but at least I dropped a couple names.

I've never auditioned for a major band but, my band are almost finished doing the final mix of our demo. We shall be sending this demo to promotion companies, record labels, venues etc etc.

Re: Just some curiosity

In the late 80's, I handed Ozzy a tape of my playing along with a resume and a lot of asking for an audition. It was after Jake was gone and he was looking to hire a new guitarist. He was in town at a record store and I taked to him for about 2 minutes. No, I wasn't good enough to even audition but I was (and am) a huge Rhoads fan so I recorded me playing a bunch of Randy's licks and songs (Dee, Diary of a Madman, Crazy Train, Mr. C., etc). All in all, it was about 20 minutes of playing. I'm fairly sure that he never listened to it or if he did he probably said, "Who is this fuck? I jhdkf laklf vnd iall jv...what the fimal p'pkv'..."
Then recently, when Jani Lane left Warrant and took Billy Morris with him, I contacted Erik Turner and Mike Fasano (who was a former drummer who was fired by Jani. I had talked via email with Mike before and he sort of gave me some tips and confidence to give it a shot). Erik told me to send him a resume, promo pics, and any recorded materials of my playing. So I did just that. Sent him a resume (which, I might add, is strange to write when your emphasis is on music, playing, gigging, etc) and a pretty high quality demo cd that I still have a ton of because that band broke up and we never distributed them. I tried to make everything look as pro as possible but, alas, I learned that, within a week Warrant had enlisted the talents of Joey Allen, their former guitarist from their heyday. SO I don't know if it went in the trash can or what. I never heard anything else. BTW, I had heard that Mike had been rehired too, then I heard that Steven Sweet was back in.
Oh well, that is the extent of my auditioning for a big name act and it can't even be called auditioning. I've auditioned for a few bands that were local but none had deals or anything like that.

Didn't Neddi(Foolius Maximus) send Halford a Demo? Whatever happened to Neddi anyway?

Re: Just some curiosity

I was always afraid of not having enough skills to apply for the audition, so I didn't thus far.

But auditions and famous band memeber are, as I've learned, very arrogant pricks.
Someone before said that he thinks Ozzy didn't even listen to his tape. That may be true.

My friend, a very talented bass player, with speed and unique technique, applyed the other day. Ok, he was trying to join famous rock band Siddharta and he failed. Just because he's 19. They took a guy that is 35 (other members are less than 30) and that have done some official music.
My friend could all the songs of them, he was also putting some monster parts in their work, they seemed to like him, but they took that guy, which even didn't know to play at least one their song. He played some strange tunes and he was taken into the band.

Until you're not famous, you lick asses to tour with someone or to have a gig, but when you have a highest rate in country, you act possessive.

Re: Just some curiosity

Congrats for all... but two of you went high and that's good. Some say that if you think that you suck, you suck, and if you think that you got to lick ass to get some gig, it's for sure that you would lick... All is in what you think about your self, and accepting the true facts about you... if you're an ace, you're an ace and fuck it, if you think that you must get better and practice more, get better and practice more and fuck it... but if you think you're a lame ass, you're a lame ass, then you get fucked, and nobody likes that... Don't you think?

Neddi did indeed send Halford a demo. Right now he's going to motorcycle school in Florida.

Haven't auditioned for any big-time artists yet. Don't really plan on it either. However, if a good, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pops up near me, I'll surely jump on it.

For now I'm working on my own stuff. Right now the band consists of me and a singer. Unfortunetely my singer probably won't be a permanent member. I'm auditioning some possible band members right now.

I auditioned for Ozzy for the Speak of the Devil tour in NYC. I was a finalist and called back for another audition (4 of us were). Brad Gillis got the job. Lots of us think that the open audition was a publicity stunt and others thought that Ozzy was looking for another basically unknown virtuoso.
My band Cage auditioned for Bud Craeger (Foreigner's manager) to tour with Foreigner for their Juke Box Hero tour at his penthouse office in Times Square. He said we were to heavy but he liked the songs. In his lobby was the actual Juke Box from the album cover. We got the audition because my uncle used to give Bud golf lessons.

I played the guitar part in Billy Ocean's song Carribean Queen. (that is my claim to "fame")
I was the lead guitar player through the 80's for:
The Fat Boys, Brenda Reed and the Exciters, Lloyd Price and Ben-e-King. This was back when Disco and Rap artists all wanted heavy metal guitar licks in their songs. EVH started it with Beat It.

So if I went out and bought a Billy Ocean Cd with that song on it do you get any royalties? I'm downloading it right now so If you do get royalties I'm screwing you over
