GUITAR WORLD Magazine Invites You To Design Your Dream Guitar - May 10, 2004

Guitar World magazine and premier guitar-makers Fender Musical Instrument Corporation are offering fans a chance to design their "dream" guitar and have it judged by three true hard rock icons: BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi (No. 1 on Guitar World's list of the greatest metal guitarists), AEROSMITH's Joe Perry and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE/AUDIOSLAVE's Tom Morello.

All submission will be accepted, regardless of whether they're scrawled on a cocktail napkin or mapped out on graph paper via CAD engineering. One winning design will be built to spec by the Fender Custom Shop.

Some of the entries will appear in Guitar World during the next several months. The winner will be announced in the October 2004 issue, with the winning entry appearing in the magazine in January 2005.

Submit your entry by August 1, 2004 to:

Guitar Design Contest
c/o Guitar World
149 Fifth Avenue
9th Floor
New York, NY 10010

Entries will not be returned.

Yeah, like I'm gonna design a Warrior and then let Fender build it?

I guess there's a limitation on the body style - Strat or Tele?

Yeah, that would be dumb. You know... designing your guitar and then letting some of the best luthiers in the business build it. That's totally stupid.

I gotta get to work.

I don't care how good they are at making Fenders, if they don't know how to build a Jackson, it's gonna be a Jackson-shaped Fender.
There's more to it than cutting out a pointy-headed geetar. If it was easy, we'd all be building our own, right?

I imagine they could get the body shape right, but would it end up with a boatneck profile and a 6" fretboard radius?

A better deal would have been for GW to pay to have whichever shop you wanted to build you one, but then I'm sure the winner would have ordered a PRS Dragon and then threw it on Ebay.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">For someone that's been building guitars for a number of years... yes, it is very easy. Fender doesn't employ braindead morons in their custom shop. They're not Ed Roman. The have REAL, SKILLED luthiers that can build pretty much anything with strings.

Re: fire up the guitar generator!

"All submissions will be accepted" = I will design some dream steel-string acoustics as well as some dream classicals. I'm serious.

But then again, with rock guitarists/icons being the judges, I'm guessing it's gotta be a "rock guitar" to impress them. Oh well, no problems. I've got a Strat-style that I want, although it's pretty plain-Jane compared to what I imagine other people coming up with, which may include any of the following: quintuple humbuckers, eleven string necks, quadruple necks (some of which are acoustic guitars, some electric, some bass), outrageous body/headstock shapes, crazy-ass tonewoods, paint made up of the blood of twenty virgin females, fanned frets, self-tuning tuners, and my patented twelve-string Floyd Rose. (Yes, I am aware that I said 11-string necks above.)

As far as I'm concerned, Jackson are already making my dream guitars.

I've been busy with the generator and Photoshop lately. You may notice that I've taken quite a liking to the KV body shape...

So if someone from the JCF wins fender will have to make a jackson pointy ? can jackson make a lawsuit against fender then ?
