• is this what happens with every generation?

o.k.,
you are born into this outlandish world, you then become a music junky. you love and respect your first loves and influences for the rest of your days, picking up new ones along the way.you then hit stride fully knowing what kind of music is your favorite kind, but keeping your ears open to all kinds of music. then you get a little older and you despise what the now young people are listening to. do the older generations dislike the younger generations music because it does not sound good to them, or is it because the older generation is now cranky
that the new music has just about all but vanquished their once heralded tunes?
i can't believe my own ears when i say to myself
nowadays-"these kids today!!"
cuz i am still a freakin' child myself. physically i'm 39, but mentally i'm 11, but a scoffing 11. this is not good. i think i need to be more open to new music than i am, but it just does not make my dick hard like the tunes i grew up with. what do you think?

perfect example-
when van halen 1 came out in '78 i was 13.
the 18 year olds who i tagged along with did not like them. it took me a long time of promo work to win them over on the issue. we're talkin a few years till they really listened to the awesome guitar work and gave in finally in the end.

I think a lot of what gets played on the radio nowadays isn't technically "music" at all. i.e., Words, rhythm and melody.

Don't sweat it Tommy. I truly believe we're in a "dark time", musically speaking. Shred being popular pretty much ain't going to happen again. Not like in our youth, at least. But good stuff will return nonetheless.

I think it's possible that we're seeing the beginnings of this in the recent garage/punk scene popularity. I'm not a huge fan of that, but think there's a strong possibility it will open doors to other, better things.

Re: is this what happens with every generation?

I'm with ya! I was a kid in the 70s, which I think was a GREAT time for music. There were all these great bands all out at once..Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, Grand Funk, etc and you still got liberal doses of Hendrix, Beatles, etc. Bands that were all very melody and harmony oriented groups. In the 80s when technical prowess was at it's peak, there was still really great songs behind it all...Van Halen still did the "oohs and Ahhs" background vocal harmonies. Now, in the vast majority of today's music, melody isn't an issue anymore. Harmony...we don't need no stinkin' harmonies! It's all very rhythm based, very percussive, more of a guitar doing a "beat" than making a melody. And singers have suddenly stopped singing and started screaming. Huh? How many years of non-practuice did it take to achive that level of screaming? How much time was spend in your room/basement/garage honing your non-vocal skills? Now, not ALL of today's bands are like that, but most are. Music itself--the art of combining notes into melodies--isn't being practiced at the moment. So I don't think you're getting old and scoffing at today's music like my folks scoffed at Kiss Alive II, I just think what you (and I) grew up listening to, that formed our opinion of music, has been lost along the way. Hopefully this whole screaming thing will go away like most fads, and somebody will dig their parents old Joe Walsh cassettes out of the attic and be influenced by THAT. Just my opinion though. I'll be quiet now.

I'm almost 26 and I can't stand what most of the 18 year olds are listening to. If that makes me a crotchety old man, then so be it. Long live those who can actually play!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Music is organized sound for the purpose of entertainment. It doesn't have to be melodic to sound good to people.

I agree though, the organization of moving harmonies and melodies isn't being practiced as much right now.

Just as a note, for the music I'm writing I'm trying use sections of thick harmonies and melodies, and sections of sparse melodic movement which is very rhythmicly(spl?) driven. Those are the two musical styles I've grown up on most.

It's natural for everyone to get a little more conservative as they get older. Society evolves and moves outside our comfort zones. The best thing to do is learn to listen to new music and find something you like. You just have to figure out what it is you like about the new stuff, which can be very difficult.

yup ninja is on the right track.

music is a much broader term than you guys realize.

listen to some George Crumb or John Cage Musique Concrete...and you'll get an idea of just how fucked up this shit can be.

Very true, and I don't think its at all necessary to "keep up" with the "new" stuff just for the sake of "keeping up" so you don't feel old.
I like what I like and feel no need to listen to the crap out nowadays over and over again to try and find some redeeming quality. It ain't there anyway!
Be true to yourself. Yes, we are getting old and the sooner you wrap your mind around that fact, the more at peace with yourself you'll be.

It matters, is the music popular?

I listen to mostly less popular bands. (Ie the ones writing music because they love music, and not for the money) Here's a List.

Thrice (my favorite band), Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, Glassjaw, As I Lay Dying, Boy Sets Fire, Alkaline Trio.

On a more serious note on the subject I think we as players see music in a different light than your average listener. Most people don't know the difference between a virtuoso and a "3 chord John". Sorry Mellencamp. lol On thing I hate about the way I play is my lack of versatility. I play metal. That's it. I still listen to all kinds of music though. Some new stuff I like, some I don't. And I like a wide array of different types of music. Unfortuantely I think the current "hard rock" type is geared toward the non musician crowd since we are highly out numbered. Hey remember disco? That changed and so will this. Technical ability is bound to be popular again sometime in the near future. It comes an goes in phases. There's plenty of great musicians out there. Just not a demand for their music at the moment. As far as the age thing it doesn't affect me like that. Guess your just a grumpy old guy Tommy. lol Probably because you expect to see Brown's arm land in Posada's mitt any day now. lol Just kidding. Great season so far.
