Re: you have one shot

i'd say that if he's a clone of anyone, it's keith. he doesn't play like either of them; joe's lead style isn't pageish at all - he hops around, and is a lot...bouncier? to my ears.

anyway...he's still cooler than anyone!

Joe Perry IS cool. He was in Calgary the other night for the Flames vs Sharks game, they interviewed him and Steven Tyler....Joe isn the leather and sunglasses etc...you are right, he has aged very well.

Re: you have one shot

Image-wise, with the low-slung Les Paul, he emulated Page. Keith's mostly been a Fender Tele guy. Playing-wise he's not so similar, but Aerosmith was always referenced to the Stones and the Yardbirds in their youth; Tyler reflected the Stones and Perry the Yardbirds, to me.

Of the Yardbirds guitarists, Perry looks more like Page than Beck (other than the big nose) or Clapton, so to me, image-wise, he was going for a Page thing. Warren doesn't really play like Eddie either, but image-wise he went for the anorexic Ed look, which was where my analogy came from.

So for that reason, and because to me Page is the superior writer and player, and had the look first, Page is cooler than Perry. Just my opinion, and no diss on Joe. If you're gonna cop a look, cop from the best, which in the early 70s was Page.

Re: you have one shot

I've never been a big Zeppelin fan, and to my ears, even though Page's licks are very cool, he seems sloppy. Joe's playing is more like he took what page was doing, did it better, and keeps getting better. When I saw Aerosmith last year, Joe was THE show-Steven Tyler was doing his thing, but seemed rather lifeless. Brad and Tom just kind of stood there. Joe just walks out with his guitar, has a little fender amp sitting on a folding chair, and starts wailing! I agree that GNR could have been much bigger without Axl. I go through a love-hate thing with Slash-loved him when i was 12-14, then hated him when I was more into METAL, but now I like him again. Strange.

Re: you have one shot

If you've ever owned a Les Paul, you know it's far more comfy to wear slung low, and everyone (except Les Paul himself) looks goofy with it up high in "normal" position

But yeah, Perry is/was far more Keef-ish than Page-ish as far as his playing style. Page was sloppy on a lot of things, but then again he was high, and he was going more for feel than technical accuracy (raw energy sells, technical accuracy doesn't sell as well as raw energy, ergo, shooting from the hip is easier for Average Joe to take)
Joe Perry is definitely his own guitarist, though, and I wouldn't label him as a copy of anyone in particular. Evidence of that is found in Aerosmith's continued success when nearly every other "clone/copy/sounds-like..." band has fallen by the wayside.
That said, I still prefer old Pre-hab Aerosmith - Dream On, Walk This Way, etc etc.

For sheer ability, most likely Chris Amott, but for general feeling and mojo, most likely Michael Amott or Jay Mascos (sp?)
