Translation please...

Hi guys!

While i was reding some guitar mags, i came across the word "luthier" several times. Don't know what it means. I asked my English teacher, but he didn't know it as well. So: can anyone tell me what luthier means?

A luthier is a guitar builder/craftsman: builds and repairs guitars.

Evidently, I've also heard the term applied to violin craftsmen, so I guess the word is extrapolated to include any maker of stringed instruments. [img]graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

dude, he's dutch. So his English teacher is probably dutch too. If you live in an English-speaking country, it'd be like asking one of your foreign language teachers about it. They're not necessarily going to know every word in the second language they are teaching

Well, English is widely spoken in the Netherlands. It used to be taught in the schools, too. Is it still, Dutch JCFers? My mother spent half her life in her homeland of Holland, and she was forever telling me how much the Dutch school system rocked. She was a champion accordion player back in the 50s & 60s; toured all over Europe, then came to America and formed a band with Jan Van Halen. Alex played drums in her band for a short while in the early 70s.

The word I believe has french origins..so it's pronunciation is Lu- the (long e)-ay (long a)

I thought it had Germanic influence, not French - Luthier=one who makes Lutes. (and pronounced LOO-thee-ur)
