• Set List Recommendations

Building a "classic rock" setlist for the new cover band i'm in, hit me with your recommendations for some good 70's/80's rock.

Not being a big fan of 70's rock, I don't want to miss anything...

you gotta do "get down tonight"
by K.C. and the Sunshine band.
it's always a crowd favorite and gets 'em dancin.
the song sounds great through blazing marshalls.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

I played in a 60's, 70's classic rock band once for a year, even though I'm an 80's Metal head , and here's a few we played:

Let it Ride - BTO
Fortunate Son - CCR
Too Rollin' Stoned - Robin Trower
Day of the Eagle - Robin Trower
Hold on Loosely - 38 Special
Little Wing - Hendrix Version
All along the watchtower - Hendrix
Wind cries Mary - Hendrix
Stranglehold - Nugent
Hey Baby - Nugent
Gimme 3 steps - Skynard
Simple Man - Skynard
Paranoid - Sabbath
Cold Shot - SRV
Voodoo child - SRV version
Pride and Joy - SRV
Rock n roll Hoochie Koo - R. Derringer
Rock n Roll - Zeppelin
Houses of the Holy - Zeppelin
Commun. Breakdown - Zeppelin
Ain't talkin' bout love - VH
Rock Candy - Montrose
Detroit Rock City - Kiss
While my guitar gently...- Clapton
I'm your Captain - Grand Funk Railroad
I'm 18 - Alice Cooper
Snortin' Whiskey - Pat Travers
Bar line 99 - Ian Moore

I wanted to play 80's Metal but our "leader" liked OLD stuff. The rest were originals that sounded Classic rock.

The one, the only, Cat Scratch Fever

We got the absolute BEST reactions when we started that one. They knew it by the opening riff. Hell, most of em knew it on the first bent note before the first chord

I snuck in a part of the solo to Freebird in a jam once - even played it really slow - and about half the crowd caught it and liked it

Personally, I wouldn't attempt Freebird unless you had 3 guitarists - they had that many guitarists for one reason - the solo to Freebird

Depending on the area you're in I'd go with:
-Cat Scratch Fever to get them up and hollerin early
-Born To Be Wild to keep them up and drinkin
-Already Gone (Eagles) - to get them boots to scootin
-Wonderful Tonight (Eric CLapton) to get the ass-grabbers on the floor
-Sweet Leaf to get the heads rollin
-Old Time Rock-N-Roll for the Hell Yeahs
-I Love Rock And Roll - because it's easier to chorus than We Will Rock You
-Bad On The Phone...I mean...Bad To The Bone - cuz the chicks dig that
-Tough Enough (Fabulous Thunderbirds) cuz the guys dig that, and you have to give them back their women
-Cocaine - need you ask?
-Anything from SRV with words in it - average Joe don't give two shits if you can play Chitlins Con Carne note-for-note, and they will let you know they don't give two shits really fast.
-Gimme Three Steps, What's Your Name, or Saturday Night Special by Skynrd - avoid Freebird at all costs
-Hold On Loosely
-I Want You To Want Me
-Eminence Front (The Who) is a damn good groove for the dancers to get with

I'd suggest avoiding the "musician's music" for bars, as you're going to get slammed by the musicians in the crowd 9 times out of 10, and the non-musicians just don't give a damn. Also avoid the socio-political songs (Holy Wars, Lord Of This World, Jeremy, etc etc) as Joe Barfly came for a drink and to escape the real world, and you're dicking with his escapism.

Course, you could whip out Christie Lane's "One Day At A Time" - that's a classic for the Teary Beers

Don't forget Rawhide

Re: Set List Recommendations

Ok, despite Kid Rock's attempt, I'd go with Feel Like Makin Love, Shooting Star, or All Right Now.
Don't forget the ACDC and ZZ Top, as well as Cream (Sunshine Of Your Love, not Anyone For Tennis).
Black Magic Woman - because you can for once get away with being a great guitarist and NOT get bashed by the crowd as a showoff.

Lights (Journey)

Wipeout if your drummer is worth a damn, and you can trade solos with him. I always did very fast-picked and percussive one-note solos that basically spelled out the melody line that the drum solo rhythm was hinting, with a fast descending run to go back into the main verse section. Also I threw in pinch harmonics at the end of each measure just before the chord change (during the solo).
