Re: Giving guitar lessons
I have never taught guitar but do take lessons. I just started up with lessons a few weeks ago again. I can say from a student point of view and past mistakes that you can't stress the basics enough. Make us use the metronome like jgcable says. I think learning to read music is beneficial. I am not that fast at it but I can read music to a degree now after taking lessons a few years ago.
Don't let us pick up bad habits. I am still paying for the bad habits I learned early on and my first teachers never corrected me. Don't neglect right hand picking technique and don't let us get away with sloppy play. Make us play it slow. I learned all these lessons the hard way and am still trying to overcome some of them. My lack of experience and impatience was my biggest enemy.
Remeber that most of your students want to learn it correctly and want you to correct them. Just be prepared for some butchery of your favorite songs. Hope that helps from a different perspective.
