Re: Ronald Reagan has died

I've gotta say that he played the part of president very well.
I was actually sad when I read his letter about his disease.
Unfortunatly, this means that Nancy will be all over the place and I hate that ***** .

Re: Ronald Reagan has died

Seriously, I'll tell what is the true irony.

Today I was sitting in dinning room and a thought about big leaders crossed my mind. I was wondering, when did Reagan die.

And now I see this ... Before this moment I haven't heard that he's dead ...

That is strange. Maybe you'll have the FBI knocking on your door for some telepathic testing.

Seriously tho, this disease is awful in the final days. People can't eat cause they don't know how. Their body is in shutdown mode as their mind is as well. They become extremely susceptible to disease like pneumonia-it's a chain reaction. My ex-girlfriends Dad was dying from this.. it was terrible and took days.

May he be in his final peace and heading to his true glory.

Re: Ronald Reagan has died

I remember coming home from high school the day he was shot. I thought it was the end of the world. Then I found out he would live. AMEN. He was the best president of my life IMO...he kicked ass while being so cool about it. Lately...he was just suffering from a mean and terrible illness. My love goes out to his family and I am thinking of them.

eh, i feel bad for the suffering he and his family must have gone thru with his illness, but i have no feelings on his passing whatso. it's not a political thing, i guess i'm just not impacted by it at all. i guess i feel bad for his family's loss, tho.

I'd have to agree with Sully in that his passing doesn't really affect me, but then I was wondering "when", y'know? But then, his Presidency had a greater effect on my personal life than his death; the end of the Cold War, the beginnings of Democracy in the Soviet Union, the groundwork for the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. Plus tons more.

Say what you want about the Iran-Contra "scandal" - Ronnie understood that a well-armed civilian militia keeps the official government where they belong - in service to the people, not to themselves. That's as true for America as it is for Iran, Iraq, Britain, or Japan (though many countries sadly still do not observe this tenet), and it's my belief that RR sought to provide Iran with a well-armed civilian militia to keep the Ayatoilet in check

I must say, I'm surprised. The wide majority of the comments on his passing have been quite respectful, and for that, you guys get my respect.

I was born in 1984, so I didn't "experience" his presidency like some of you folks. However, from what I've seen, read, and heard, he was a fine human being. He always had (and always WILL have) my respect and admiration.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Reagan.

Re: Ronald Reagan has died

Newc, I suspect you're a little confused about the Iran-Contra-Affair. Short synopsis, as I remember it (...which, admittedly, may not be too great myself, either ) :

- the US covertly sold arms to the Iranian government. (...Not the Iranian people.) Why we did this is still a subject of conjecture. Many speculate that it may have been an attempt to:

a) make amends for our support and arming of Iraq during the bloody Iran-Iraq war;

b) make good on a secret promise that Reagan made to secure the release of the US Embassy hostages when he took office, and/or;

c) make inroads with Iranian govt. moderates, including to help secure the release of different US hostages held in other parts of the Middle East (Lebanon) by Iranian-supported radical groups.

- The profits of the arms sales went to fund money and arms for the Contras rebels in South America, who were fighting the then quasi-communist/socialist Nicaraguan Sandinista government. This support expolited a loophole in a Federal law that explicitely forbid the US govt. from supplying military aid to the Contras.

And so ends today's history lesson. There will be a quiz on Thursday - be prepared!

Re: Ronald Reagan has died

What a sad, sad, day....Can't really explain it but I cried when I saw the paper this morning. Didn't know til a couple of hours ago so it caught me off guard. He was somewhat of an idol of mine when I was in junior high and high school. My friends and family always referred to me as the one who thought Ronald Reagan was the greatest President of the United States, bar none. The planet as we know it may not even exist now were it not for his policies, charisma, compassion, and decidedly firm stance. He flexed U.S. muscle without making us look like a bully and potentially saved the world from the great bear.
ANd what a terrible disease! Say what you will about Nancy but just imagine how sad and depressing it must be to have your spouse no longer know you. Thank God he is free of that hell that he didn't deserve. And now she can focus on the good memories of a great , great man. God Bless You Mr. President.

Shreddermon, your Iran-Contra synopsis is right on the money. Of course, we don't know if there was really a deal to wait to release the hostages when Reagan took office, but the timing of the release was
interesting. I believed that at the time, but now I tend to think Iran came up with that FU for Jimmy on their own.

Reagan showed class by letting Carter use AF1 to greet the freed hostages in Germany though. America rode high while he ruled.
Ron is the MAN!!!!
