I have wanted a Mustang GT (87-93) since High School, when I used to drive one (not mine) on a regular basis. So I have been looking and looking, for several weeks without much luck. I'm in NH, and most 15 yr old cars up here are junk! Then, out of nowhere, this deal falls into my lap: It is a 1990 LX w/5.0 V8, 29K original miles (!), one owner car, out of Mississippi. Body and interior are perfect, as new. A bit of fading/dried out window molding is it. This car was stored outside, unfortunately, but the paint is 100%. Sounds too good to be true, but it isn't. The owner of a local Ford dealer is a Fox-body Mustang enthusiast, and he hunts down these cars on the internet, flys out, and drives them home to NH. He has 5 mint examples in his lot right now. The one I am looking at is probably the best one. I could get it for around $6K. Is this a good deal? The car has been owned by the dealership owner, and supposedly gone through, restored, as it was/is his own personal car. Should I 'settle' for the LX or hold out for a GT? I don't want to pass up a deal this good, on a practically new, 15 yr old car. Also this car is an automatic, which I don't mind, but any concerns there? Thanks a bunch for your help, I know there are a lot of car guys out there, just like me!

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
Like Ron said the LX's were just stripped GT's so if you like that factor I'd go for it, I'd personally go for the 5speed over the AOD, my sister had blew hers up on her 92 lx 4cyl with 90k on it and I blew one on a 89 with a 4cyl a few years ago but that one had like 130k. It seems like prime examples of 90-93 5.0's still go for $4-6k, GT's seem to bring on that high scale so I would talk him down on that price. You plan to keep it stock or put add ons on it.
Fixed for spelling

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
I've have my '92 LX 5.0 notch since '94. I'm the second owner and RacerX is right, they are lighter. I like them better than the GT's. Mine is an automatic also (AOD), they are ok, but if you want any bottom end power out of it you should put in at least 3.73 or 4.10 gears. I have 4.10's and love em, serious seat of the pants power (along with the other mods of course).

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
I always thought the GTs from that generation looked a little gaudy, anyway. Too much body cladding crapola. The LX 5.0s were much cleaner in appearance and the same, if not better, performance. My brother-in-law had one for several years and drove the snot out of it. (He's a state trooper, so no ticket worries. ) Kick ass cars. ...I would still love to have a convertible version, myself.
Plus, if you want a real "sleeper" just take off the 5.0 badges. Then those Camaro, Firebird, and cheesy hopped-up-Civic drivers will think they're taking on one of the wimpy 2.3L four-bangers. Suuuu-priiiiise!

There's a reason why the State Troopers in Texas used the LX vs. the GT. They are lighter and they have a more usable trunk. Also, just because it says LX instead of GT, your insurance is gonna be WAAYYYYY Cheaper.

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
I own an 89 5.0 LX hatchback. I paid $6500 (with 32k on the clock) for it around 5 years ago. It was the nicest one I'd seen while seeking it, and strangely enough, the cheapest one I'd looked at.
I've recently noticed that any nice and clean 5.0 Fox bodies, of 87-93 vintage are running around 8-10k in the Cleveland area as it is getting harder to find nice ones. I was sorta surprised to see the price scalating, but it is understandable as they haven't made them in 11 years. 6K for a clean one with that mileage is a good price IMO. There are a lot of aftermarket places for restoringthem and it's all available to get it back on its feet.
Standards are more fun, but I bracket race, so an auto is the only thing to use really.
My car is upgraded with a late model electronic 4R70W transmission in it with digital programmable controller (way cool), Precision Industries "Stallion" 3k stall, 5 clutch lockup converter. 4.10 gears,
The motor in mine now, a 306, 10.5 to 1, balanced and blue printed, girdled, crossdrilled and chamferred crank, ported and flowed edlebrock heads, GT40 intake with ported and portmatched lower, lift split duration (favoring exhaust) roller cam with billet roller rockers, 24# injectors and 175 hp NOS. Prolly lots more I'm forgetting.

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
Yep , that's your motor allright John..
Next year it's going to be a Shelby Cobra replica with a 427 ...If I could find one.
If not a Z06 I guess.
I'm not a big fan of Mustangs but that new one that just came out kicks ass..
I like it better than the new Vette....I think.
I think they fucked up the looks of the vette big time ...a lot of Vette owners I've talked to feel the same way.."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!
"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
I agree with Cleveland as 6g isn't a bad price if it's in the condition you say it is. I don't see many 87-93 5.0's on the road much around Chicago that aren't beaters or rust buckets. I have a 93 LX coupe with 18,000 miles I purchased new in August of 93 and still enjoy driving it when time permits. I'd say go for it if you can and don't worry about the AOD, it will be fine unless you start to add some serious hp to the car. Good Luck!

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
Nope, I'm not planning a lot of performance mods. Maybe a K&N (or similar) FIPK kit and a chip, but thats about it. More interested in tweaking the suspension and possible some new wheels and tires. This thing is 100% bone stock, and immaculate! Carfax checks out, too. There is no way I can talk them down any further. They were asking $8595 for it, luckily, I knew how much the owner paid for it (thanks to a loose-lipped salesman) and how much he had into it for parts. They went through it, and replaced the radiator, 4 new tires, new battery etc. as it had been sitting, for literally years. So I got him down around $6K, and I think that I did pretty good. It is next to impossible to fine an LX or a GT that hasn't been modded to death. Not that they are bad, but I have a problem paying long green for someone elses (supposed) upgrades.
BTW - I just paid for a 30 day unlimited Carfax account, so if you need any VIN's run, just hit me with an email, I would be happy to help out.

Re: Mustang Enthusiasts - Help Me
I sold my 90LX 5.0 5 spd just over a year ago. Boy do I ever regret that. I am currently looking for another one, but it has to be as mint as the one I sold. I would say $6k is a great deal for such low miles, and as long as it is rust free.
