At 24 I was 122 pounds. What was Joe Piscapo at age 30? 120 pounds maybe, and after about 5 years he was up to about 220...........

          Re: Weight lifting tips?

When I graduated high school I weighed about 160. At my heaviest (a couple of moths ago) I weighed 260. This was done through proper training, eating like a horse, and whey pprotein/weight gainers only. Consequently, I am now dropping the weight to compete at a lighter weight class (240 now and I have 15 more pounds to lose).

Free weights are the best thing you can use. They are only dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and you try to go too heavy. If you are smart about it and use weights you can handle until your body is ready to handle the stress of something heavier, then you will find you progress much faster than with machines and such. If you want to strengthen the tendons as well as the muscles, do pause reps. Don't bounce the weight at the bottom of the movement. Take it nice and slow on the way down and power the weight up.

I would recommend sticking with 5 sets of 5 repititions for the basic lifts (squat, deadlift, bench and military press) until you have the base strength to do more reps. When you get tired, your form gets sloppy and then you run the risk of an injury. You can do higher reps for auxiliary exercises like those for arms, calves as well as lateral raises for shoulders. Stick with the core lifts at lower reps first, then hit the accessory lifts at reps of around 12-15.

Most important thing in lifting: CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR. Don't worry about how much weight you're lifting to impress others. Concentrate on training properly and the heavy weights will go up in time.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Joe Piscapo wasn't exactly all natural, though. There are all sorts of products, some legal and some illegal that can help one make those kinds of gains. Unfortunately, if they are abused, just like any substance, they can cause more harm than good.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Correct. Sometimes I will do 2 or 3 weeks of sets of 100 reps with very light weight. It works wonders for building size and also if done with very little rest in between makes for a good cardivascular/calorie burn workout. Only fools load up the weights, and then cheat just to move them............

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I never heard of Joe doing anything bad during that time. When he was 120 pounds he was diagnosed with cancer, and they gave him only a few years to live. He quit smoking (which he did like a chimney) and hit the weights, and ate only the good stuffs. If he was taking anything that was bad, he was most likely prescribed it, as he was going through cancer treatment at the time, and that takes alot out of people..........

The only thing I know for sure whe took were the supplemets he endorsed for a while back in the early 90's (Cybergenics?). Those are perfectly legal, anything controlled Joe did or didn't do, I really don't know about. I didn't mean to imply that Joe couldn't have done it without illegal substances. I hope that didn't come across.
