Far be it from me to side with the French (I'm an Englishman, dammit!), but you've got to appreciate that you guys over there have much bigger and less congested roads, and WAY cheaper gas than we have in the UK and Europe. Fact is, those big trucks can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. That, and the fact that the sort of people who buy them (over here) tend to be real tossers...

Europe is small car mania, everywhere you go. It's part of their conservation mindset, (in which they are miles beyond North America), also cuz gas is very $$ in a lot of countries, like Czech Rep, etc. compared to costs of other things. It isn't all that surprising that a European country would consider a move like that, I would expect more if it gets passed. There is less a focus on individual "rights", there is more of a common good mentality there.
There are several groups pushing for this in USA for a while now, because of collision deaths, but people here get bitchy if they perceive their "rights" to amuse themselves are being infringed upon.

The Guardian added that France caught on late to the vogue for SUVs, mainly because Renault, Peugeot and Citroen have not so far offered them. Ever own a French car? Rumor has it that Renault is coming out with an SUV-ATV. They are going to name it the "FROG"

You guys are entitled to your opinions, and I respect them. But government action that seeks to ban something simply because it is not "politically correct" is over the top wrong. Let the free marketplace decide. ...You know? That would be determined by the people buying based on their wants and needs.

I don't particularly like how my wife's SUV drives. But we have a little one, frequently have lots of stuff and people to take around in it, and have snowy winters. The compromise was to buy one of the smaller car platform-based models with AWD.

The French officials - or any politician, for that matter - who try to tell us what we can and can't drive based on spurious political arguments can just bite me. The issue isn't SUVs. The issue is government representing the broad interests of the people rather than special interests who have convinced the media that their narrowly-focused agenda is politically correct and, therefore, "represents" what's good for all. my friend was recently broadsided by an expedition in his Honda Civic....they had to pry him out with the jaws of life...he was generally un hurt, luckily. THe woman driving the behemoth of death had no car insurance and tried to say it was his fault that she ran a red light. [img]graemlins/poke.gif[/img]

suv's are retarded. Unless you have a family of 5 and live 20 miles out on a dirt and gravel road. you don't need one.

I had a friend that was broadsided in his giant SUV by an illegal alien driving a small, pollution-spewing, uninspectable, uninsured something or another. This driver was also drunk and ran a red light. This driver died.

What really pisses me and my friend off and the truly sad thing about this whole thing is that the chrome side-step and the door on the SUV had to be replaced. Luckily HIS insurance covered it.

So, if they all drove big pickups, that'd be OK with you. Only idiots drive SUV's seems to be a common mentality around here. Whatever [img]graemlins/eyes.gif[/img] . Yes, I own an SUV and apparently, unbeknown to me, my wife and I are idiots who obviously don't understand the simple rules of driving. We are also idiots for wanting an SUV, since they obviously serve no pupose at all except to kill people and consume more gas than any other vehicle (except full size pickups and muscle cars, oh and RV's etc, etc.....). Just try to keep your friggen' renault out of my way OK.

Cars don't kill people. People kill people. Granted, some vehicles hold up better in crashes. Not French cars. I have had to stop driving after almost 36 years. Now I am a passenger. Watching todays drivers from the passenger side is enough to not want to drive again after my eye gets fixed. I don't care what they drive. They are all maniacs!!!! It's like, "No one can touch me. Not only that, there isn't anyone else on the road that I can see."
