• Damageplan & Slayer

A great show.

Damageplan opened and were fantastic, although the sound was kind of muddy. Those boys can play - Vinnie is a monster. Near the end of the set, Pat said "Congrats Halifax, you've just won a free guitar lesson from Dimebag", and DB let her rip for about 3 minutes. His playing really impressed but his tone was horrible...too much gain, scooped all to hell and fuzzy.

Then came Slayer. Ooh mama. I hadn't seen these guys since Clash of The Titans and they did not disappoint. They played all of Reign in Blood and a good mix of old and new. I haven't felt that much energy coming from a band in a long time.
Great show.

The thing about Slayer shoes is that, well, they're fuckin' Slayer. You get all excited screaming along "Blood dripping from the jaws of death, not enough to satisfy..." and you go back to being a pissed off 15 year old for an hour and a half. I think Slayer shows have really dropped in coolness in the last 6-7 years or so. I saw them in 1995 at the Shrine in downtown L.A. and the crowd was fucking INSANE. All skinheads and old gangsters and guys that MUST have just gotten out of prison. There were guns waving around, six or seven fights at any given moment, and the cops were sitting by the doors just trying to at least keep the chaos INSIDE. Then in 1996 I saw Slayer play the first Ozzfest outside L.A., and throughout the day people moshed at the mere mention of the word "Slayer". By the time the band went on we had huge bonfires that everyone was dancing around and throwing their shirts, and other people in. Guys were bleeding all over the place, it looked like a fucking riot. A cop even got killed!!

Fast forward to 2002 when I went to see Slayer at the Universal Ampitheater(right by Universal Studios) after they became popular with the whole nu-metal crowd. The opening bands were possibly the WORST bands I have ever seen in my life, and the whole place was pussified. A bunch of kids in KORN shirts, security breathing down your fucking neck, industry people all over the fucking place, ASSIGNED FUCKING SEATING!!! What the fuck happened to my once favorite band? The chaos and anarchy that was once a Slayer show was gone, and a little part of me died with it. Then I went to see Slayer again at the same place, this time on Century Media's tab since In Flames(Been Flamin') in their white jumpsuits opened for Slayer. Same shit experience. I even got thrown out of there for losing my shirt!! They wanted me to spend like $35 on a fucking Slayer T-Shirt or leave. I gave the security the slip, and went backstage. More cocksuckers everywhere, the place looked like the fucking Grammys there were so many suits. And facist security guards. Slayer is dead to me. I ended up going home pissed off, chasing down some stupid skinheads handing out propaganda, and went home angrier than ever, but in a bad way.

I've never got the chance to see Slayer live, but I am going to see Damageplan the 20th of this month. They cancelled last time they were here, so this is a solo headlining makeup date....anyway will let you know how it goes.

Re: Damageplan & Slayer

There is no other band I have seen as many times as Slayer. The first time I had seen them was at Clash of the Titans. Last fall was the most recent show. I think I had seen them on average once every two years between those two shows. I never have seen a bad Slayer show. I couldn't care less about the people at the show. I am there to see Slayer and they continue to kill at every show I have ever seen.

The first time I saw Slayer was also on the Clash of the Titans tour in '91 (I think that was the year) at Madison Square Garden in NYC. AIC opened, I forget the order or Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth, but it was an awesome show. Seats got torn out and thrown everywhere as soon as Slayer went on... it was insane!!! I saw them on Ozzfest in '98 or '99, at the Tattoo The Earth festival at Giants Stadium in 2000, and I think I saw them another time. Always a killer band for sure.

Re: Damageplan & Slayer

I probably saw them right around the same time as I saw them in Connecticut at Hershey Lake Compounce (I think it was the first year Hershey owned it) on that tour. I remember during AIC people went to the amusement park instead of the concert. It was almost empty.
