Helmets are great if you do land on your head, but then what good is that if you're paralyzed from the neck down?

My parents used to ride bikes - my dad had a Honda 350 with a real Police windshield that our neighbor had gotten for him at a Police Auction - gloss black all over with the hardshell saddlebags - sweeeet! - and my mom had a little Honda 250, and we'd all go riding around. It was fun, but I'd never have one, just because I know I'd try something stupid, and pay for it

That map doesn't look right to me... And I don't where a lid either, I should though, but I don't...

              Where'd you get that?

Pat, the map came from this page. It probably looks wrong because almost all of the yellow states don't require helmets for adult riders.

                  Re: Opinions

Sadly, I've seen too many peoples brains splattered in motorcyles accidents that wouldn't have really killed them otherwise. I even have a brain damaged bro, who "was" a marathon bicyclist, and wrecked his bike on the way down the block to the store, and busted his head. Now he's basically retarded. Guess they have some merit. I'd hate wearing one, but I guess I would. I quite riding years ago. Too many dead friends and a couple crippled ones.

I wear one when I drag race with no complaint.

Although I would be dead had i been wearing my seatblets in my last wreck in my mustang, I wear them now. Luckily, I was thrown out of the car about 35 feet and it was compacted to where I'd assuredly died in it. I doubt that I'd be so lucky in round two, I thik I used up all my bonus lives on that escapade...

                    Re: Opinions

I hear ya John, I was in a wreck that death was certain if I'd have had a belt on, but I wear one religiously now, just no lid if I can avoid it.

On that map, Missouri is one state that requires a lid by all riders, so that's one that caught my eye, i don't go over there too often because I've never got a lid on. Anyway, they're trying to change it, so I'm sure it will be like Florida or others with certain restirctions, I didn't think Nebraska had any laws either, but maybe I'm wrong on that one.

Just ride responsibly I suppose... The rockets are the worst I think, but they're all dangerous. I believe if it's your time, yer gone anyway, it's all in the cards, whichever type of deck you play with...

                      Re: Opinions

With the high percentage of bad driver morons here in the Washington DC area, you couldn't pay me enough to ride a motorcycle. Maybe if I lived out in the desert or something...

                        Re: Opinions

Yeah, my childhood friend moved to West Virginia to ride more because drivers here were too stupid. Ironically, he was hit by a car or truck (he's not sure), and then left in a country road ditch for around 8 hours before being found. He's a parapelegic now. Really nice guy.

Honestly, it sorta helped him. He was a loser alcoholic kind of dude, and after the accident (his beautiful wife left his ass, nice girl huh?) he then moved back here, straightened up and got a degree in computer programming and makes pretty outstanding dough i guess now. Had it not happened, he'd have never got too far. Guess he'd trade it all for his legs. But, a helmut would not have helped his injuries as they were spinal I think.

                          Re: Opinions

To all the morons that don't wear helmets, I pose this question. Do you wear leathers?

Why? If you hit a tree doing 80, they're not going to save you. I mean, you're dead anyway so what's the point?

The point, dipshit, is that leathers cost far less than skin grafts. Helmets cost less than brain damage. Helmets are NOT going to save you at speed if you somehow come off the bike and land headfirst in a pothole. But if you come off and go tumbling, the possibility of serious injury is reduced simply by having a piece of plastic with foam in it around your head.

What I don't get is, what's the fucking problem with helmets? Does your dick get shorter when you put one on? Are you afraid the chicks will laugh at your helmet hair? "But teh gubmint shoodint make me do tings!" I agree. Then again, I also think anyone riding without a helmet should be shot on site for being so insanely fucking stupid. It goes along with my 10-point idiocy reduction plan.

                            Re: Opinions

BM - The chief problem with helmets is that there's a real, demonstrable, and sizeable increase in the number and severity of neck injuries in crashes involving helmeted riders. That's a fact borne out by independent studies of the same accident data the NHTSA uses to evaluate the results of crashes. There've been numerous attempts to get NHTSA to sanction a formal study by they seem to have no intention of jepardizing the view in which they've been invested for many years now: namely that there are no drawbacks to helmet use.

Thus the problem for me becomes that a bunch of pointy-headed bureaucrats, without engaging in a full examination of the issue, has unilaterally chosen to force me to wear a "protective" device that greatly increases my chances of never walking again if I should be so unfortunate as to be hit (again) by another inattentive cage pilot. I'd just like to make my own decisions where they involve my own well-being. Seems reasonable enough to me, no?

                              Re: Opinions

Alright, ya'll knew I'd be here sooner or later.

I was brought up on bikes, ridden my whole life, raced motocross from little kid age to young buck age, switched to streetbikes and roadraced for 8 years earning an AMA Superbike license along the way (they don't give those away). I was damn good on a local level and competive on a national level.

Along the way I have been down at speeds from parking lot tipovers to speeds that would make most of you hurl and you tumble so long and so far you have to take a bus back to the track. Where the cornerworker asks you what day this is and you answer, "Well, it was Sunday when I crashed and I've been tumbling and sliding for so long...it must be Monday!" Where your shiny new GSXR racebike is now 2' 4" long and about that tall.

I also have well over 200,000 street miles under my belt and I have never, repeat NEVER ridden without a helmet. I have certainly destroyed a few along the way, and those dead helmets have certainly saved my life more than once. I couldn't care less about your statstics saying helmets cause neck injuries or are insufficient, or blah blah blah.

I am a well above average skill level motorcyclist and I wear an Arai helmet 100% of the time I am on a bike, any bike

                              'Nuff said.

                                Agreed Yet...

And BM, Blow me... I can make my own decisions without being called a moron or that I should be shot on site. Dumbass...

I do know of people that were killed for the simple reason they DID have a helmet on fell off, neck snap, done, game over.

Leathers? 90+ degrees out? Nope, not me, but I always wear my boots and jeans. I wear leathers as needed.

Chuck, you guys talk of mostly crotch rockets and stoopid fast bikes, I ride a Harley and I'm not getting crazy with the speed, I'll max out at 70-80 MPH on the interstate, most of my riding is on rural, country roads, no big city, not many morons around here, and there's a ton of bikes so more people are aware of motorcycles around, it makes a difference in the grand scale. Anyway, my point here, is I haven't seen many, if any Harley/custom bike riders with anything more than a brain pan on anyway, WTF is that thing going to do? I've never seen a full shield, rocket lid on anyone around here, Sturgis, Milwaukee, etc.

Anyway, it's no doubt that a helmet may help in "some" cases, but again, it depends on the shuffle of the cards man, if it's yer time, yer gone anyway, walk outside on your private road and get hit in the head with a rock from space, or a bullet from a 21 gun salute...

Helmet or not, let those who ride, decide... You've probably never even been on a bike BM, or maybe ridin b!tch with some one...
