Re: Opinions

Pat, I use the speed illustration cause most people equate speed with danger. If you speed, you'll die, that mentality.
My point is, if you ping your head off some old ladies Buick fender at 10 mph with your temple, you're dead. With a quality helmet on, you'll have a headache and be pissed.

I agree with the right to choose, I just shake my head and wonder about those who choose not to wear one.

"There are two types of riders...those who have crashed, and those who are going to."

BTW, as much respect as I have for both of you gentlemen, those so-called "statistics and facts" about helmets causing neck injuries are such old-as-the-hills bullshit. Those wives tails have been disproven over and over by the AMA and NHTSA (NOT our friends) till its silly.

      Re: Opinions

LOL, I knew that was comin... There are a lot of stats stating a helmet will help under 40MPH, but not much good over that speed.

I've wrecked twice in 8 days, this year, no helmet, boots, jeans and long sleeves, nothing major, just bent my wheel and rotor, but it'll certainly make you think twice about some decisions... This was just a month or so ago as well, I've been riding all day today.

Oh well, to each his own... I'm heavily insured and my family will be well taken care of in case of an unforseen tragedy, or I get shot in the head.

        Re: Opinions

God, I really don't want to argue, but those stats stating helmets are not much good over 40mph...the vast majority of my get-offs have been on the race track and have been way over 40mph, so I guess I'm walking proof that...

...that stats can mean anything you or I want them to mean to prove our point.

Peace brothers and ride on however you want!

I hear ya bro... Nothing to argue about, really.

It's all in the cards man, can't say much more than that.

            Re: Opinions

Like the marathon bicyclist friend of mine. He ALWAYS wore a helmet at rallies or whatever they call them.

Went to the store about 1.5 blocks away to get drink one eve, and some local dumbass failed to yield stop sign and knocked him off the bike hitting his head on a curb at a fairly low speed. No helmet on, now he's brain damaged...

Crosscountry marathon rider, outstandingly unique carpenter and generally cool fruity tree hugger guy turns into coma victim for 3 months and comes back basically retarded with a permanent trache hole in his throat...

Seen lotsa Harley riders here take the big slam. Seems most were drinking though and got it at 2:30am after the bars. 40 mph into a parked car is a hard hit...

IMO though, it's something that should be YOUR choice. Like abortion, smoking, drinking, pot use, seatbelts, driving and cell phone usage, owning SUVs, or owning my fucking pitbull or my guns (both quite responsibly), and all the other shit, I don't want the government telling me to do shit. I'll figure it out on my own thank you...

Too much friggin government as it is. IMO, Do as you will, harm no one (except maybe yourself).

              Re: Opinions

I'm with Pat on this one - I got tagged on the front right side @ 75 MPH by a drunk driver swerving across 3 lanes of traffic one evening (the guy that hit me was pursued a bit farther down the freeway @ well in excess of 100 MPH and I'd estimate that he was doing that when he hit me as well). I caught sight of him before he hit me in my peripheral vision and was moving towards the inside part of the inside lane but didn't get over far enough to avoid the collision. The bike was knocked sideways at speed but, as reported to the cops by several witnesses, I managed to keep it upright for quite a ways until the speed of the skid was much less than my original speed but eventually lost it and was uncerimoniously spit off (breaking the cardinal rule of never allowing yourself to be highsided off the bike in a skid). Landed square on the top of my head, bike came down on my leg but bounced up and I rolled quite a ways, got up, and walked off the freeway. Damage: 15 stitches to the top of the noggin, a moderately skinned right elbow and a slightly fractured right ankle.

My only point in relating this incident is this: I've played it over and over in my mind and I'm 100% certain that had I been wearing the full-face lid I normall wear when touring I wouldn't be here telling you about this today. Say what you will about helmets but they do decrease both your peripheral vision and your ability to hear what's going on around you. The fact that I saw/heard this jackass coming allowed me to begin the move the probably saved my life. If I hadn't been moving away from him and he'd hit me full force I have no doubt I would have been pitched over the edge of the overpass we were on and would have hit the concrete a couple of stories below at full freeway speed. So yeah, not having a helmet on probably cost me a few stitches but I think it was a pretty good trade in that instance.

                    Re: Opinions

Mmmm well... I asked for opinions, here's mine. The statistics are use to defend the right of freedom of choice, to those who don't want to use the fucking helmet, and to those who want to protect them selves using it, as I can see. . I think that a helmet is a "kind of license" for some stupid kids to speed up, going far the safety rules dareing their lives. As someone said, if you speed you die, no matter if a helmet's on or not, if your hour arrived. I think the people who don't like to wear it, are the kind of riders that don't speed, ride Harleys type bikes, and just ride at a "save" speed in a pleasure ride with a group, alone or whatever. To those who like the sporty bikes, like me, is a must wearing the helmet because is for sure that if you got a sport bike you'll speed, at least a little somewhere in your life. There is a right to the rider to do whatever they think, because they "don't want the goverment to tell what they should do", and there should be like that. Let the helmet be use by the people who want, and not to use to the people who don't, because it's their responsability their own acts and the concequences they attract! It's a fact that if you have an accident and you are using a helmet, and you don't get injure, you'll defend the helmet... and if you aren't using it, and you get fuck-up without being killed, you'll have the feeling of guilt for not have used it; and if you are using it and the helmet caused you a spinal injury you'll damn it. That simple... So if the state you live in have the compulsory helmet law, and you are "convinced" that it would not be a protection, move on to a state that don't obligue you to. If you don't want to move, you'll be having a pain in the ass. If everything it's alright with you where you live, you're fucking happy. To those who are pro helmet, use it... to those who don't, use goggles... and a hat if you don't want to get uncomb.

                      Re: Opinions

Pat kindly pointed me to this thread knowing I'd get my 2 cents in. 1st let me state I'm tired of seeing people on this board refer to others as "idiots, morons or even assholes" because their opinions differ. Knock it off or get the hell out ....

I'm lucky enough to live in the state of NH. As many of you may know our state motto is "live free or die" if you don't know what this means let me explain it ..

There's no seatbelt law (for adults), No Helmet Law (for Adults). No permits to own a handgun, No income tax, no sales tax, no whiny liberals allowed. The state of NH has been told by the federal Govt to enact a seatbelt law or lose federal highway funding.. NH says F-you we will fund it ourselves. We have a small govt here, low crime, good air etc ...

All these rights are based on what this counrty was founded on .. Freedom .. Freedom of choice..no more no less .. It's not your job or anyones business if I don't wear a helmet just like it's not my business if you decide you want too.

If this country put it's noses back into its own family affairs and stopped expecting society to do it for them things would be a lot better off. Worry about how YOU raise your kids and their values and maybe they will wear that seatbelt, helmet etc instead of having big brother do it for you...

Every law that's passed and every rule thats made is a right you not only lose but will probably never get back without a civil war or revolt ..(that wont happen in todays day and age)

Stop letting the Govt tell you what to do and take responsiblity for yourselves, your families and your values .....

No seatbelt here, No Helmet , 9mm pistol, and the freedom to speak my mind ... god I love this state ... Off to Bike week

I wear a seatbelt, laws or no laws. I wear a helmet when I ride ATV's. I don't let my sons ride their ATV's without their helmets either.

I'm cool with peoples right to choose to wear one and have the "freedom" to die if they so choose not. Those who choose not to, should pay a higher inusrance premium tho.
