Looking for a good read

This past week I devoured 3 books. Clive Cusslers' White death. Entertaining, moderately paced. Typical Cussler fiction mixed with a little reality.
The other two are head and shoulders above White death. They are The Face and The Taking by Dean Koontz. I'm a big Koontz fan I have read everyone of his books. Somehow I missed The Face when it was first released. Very well written book. It would make an awesome movie. The Taking is a new release from Koontz. Great use of misdirection. The ending will blow you away. Both are however typical Koontz, good versus evil.

I've just finished reading Stephen King's Wizard & Glass. I decided to read the entire Dark Tower series again when I found out that King had finally released Wolves of Calla. It's been an 8 year wait. Now I'm dirty that the book is selling for $65 (more than I can warrant spending on a novel) and won't be available in paperback for some time.

And now book 6, Song of Susannah is out too (2 DT books in a year???) and from what I've read online, the series has Jumped the Shark. Very disappointing.

I haven't read any Koontz in a long, long time. Might have to check the new one out. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

If you are interested into philosophical thinking about war, go and find Vitomil Zupan's Minuet for 25-shot Guitar.

The book was translated to English a couple of years ago. App. 400 pages, two parallel stories.
The best book I have read in 2003.

Or try Vladimir Bartol's Alamut.

For fun stuff I was reading Scarpetta series a while ago. The first few ones are good, but the quality goes downhill fast and drastically in the last few books. I guess I'm still more of a classical fan since my fav sleuth writer is always Ellery Queen. [img]graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

Another book I just finished is Milan Kundera's Immortality. I love the light style of this book. It's fun to read but always gets you pondering on love, sex, history, death, etc. Definitely give it a try! [img]graemlins/toast.gif[/img]

For the moment I'm reading Flaubert's Temptation of St. Anthony, and Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus in german. It's fucking dense. [img]images/icons/blush.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

For study and work I'm translating Bourdieu's Language and Symbolic Power, since I'm deseprately destitute for another custom Jackson. [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

Rules of Prey by John Sanford. Excellent book and first in his Lucas Davenport detective series. Kinda old now, but still one of my faves.

If you like currrent event based espionage stuff, Memorial Day by Vince Flynn is getting great reviews. That's my fathers day gift I think (will find out sunday).

Children of the Night by Dan Simmons. A fantastic modern day twist on the vampire legends. Main character is an American working in an orphanage in Romania who ends up with a vampire infant. Completely bizarre.

More vampire stuff, The Vampire Odyssey, The Wildlings, and Parliament of Blood by Scott Ciencin. Scott has written TONS of science fiction stuff, but wrote those 3 vampire novels in the early 90s. They're out of print now, but you can get them used lots of places, maybe even Amazon. Probably the best vampire stuff I've ever read. Takes place in modern LA.

Never been a huge fan of Koontz, which is odd because my all time favorite is The Watchers. I wish he would have written a sequel to that (though the one about the kid allergic to sunlight was related). It's a shame they turned Watchers into such a god awful movie. The Bad Place was just too wierd, I couldn't get into it. Tick Tock was good, but then it turned into some kinda almost comedy thing at the end, what the hell? I thought about reading Phantoms, but was leary because my experience with his books is about 50-50 on whether I'll like it or not. What's your opinion on Phantoms relative to his other work? It kinda reminds me of The Stand by King based on the overview on the book jacket.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I got to meet Carlos at the Sergeants Course graduation, he was the guest speaker. He was very ill and frail at the time, and he died shortly after that. He was a very softspoken Southern gentleman. You would never know of his exploits as a (the) ultimate Marine sniper. I love Ann Rice's books. The whole Vampire chronicles are a great, historical, and character rich read. I have read all her stuff, including her erotica (wow, that stuff is out there [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img] It makes Mrs LPC and I seem like pre-schoolers [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] )

I say read the Dark Tower Series by King. I just finished the 6th book yesterday. I was a little worried at the end of Wolves of Calla that it was going down the shitter but Susanah's Song kicked serious ass. I can't wait for book 7, The Dark Tower, this winter!!!!!

-48 Laws of Power (interesting - kinda like "Art Of War", but picture Sun Tzu as a CEO or management figure [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] )

-Myst - The story of Atrus. Yeah I know, computer game geek, but it's actually kinda interesting when it describes what goes into creating an "Age" (world). If you apply it literally to a Creationist mindset, it makes you think "Wow, God had think of all that stuff" [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
