  • Another job offer

I just got a phone call the other day from a friend that I went to school with. He is leaving his job at Jackson(with Fender) and offered me first shot at it. I politely declined. I enjoy guitar teching way too much to work in a factory, especially one out in Corona!! Anyways, if I did want to work for a guitar builder, Jackson would of course be my first choice, but I am really happy doing what I do(except the part where I don't tour for two months and scrape a meager living on local gigs, studio work and repairs).

        Re: Another job offer

First off. The last time I was in Corona, it was the stink capital of the world. Norco is an evil place. In Marin County, I used to live three houses up from a very good guitar tech that worked out of his garage and worked at a music store as well. I also knew a tech that has been all over the place. If you really like what you do, Suck it in and take the job. Both of these guys are talented as hell, but without the dough they are just artists that can't pay the bills.

As a guitar tech I make MUCH more money than I would working for a guitar manufacturer. I know many guitar techs, and also quite a few people who work at guitar manufacturers. I would much, much rather be on the road as a guitar tech than working in a factory for a manufacturer.

That was another thing, I would have had to be at work at like 5am, or some stupid shit. I've called my friend at Fender at work at 7am before, and he was there. Why the hell anyone wants to build guitars at the ass crack of dawn is beyond me. The last time I saw the sun come up it was crossing the border back from a TJ whorehouse, with a death metal band that shall remain nameless(they are on tour with Suffocation right now).

you'd be glad of a 5:00 AM starting time.
You could leave at 4:00 AM, haul ass and make it. Now if you had a 7:00 AM start time, you'd have to leave at 5:00 AM to make it, because the freeways turn into parking lots in that hour's time. They probably work 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM with an hour's lunch break, and you'd catch heavy
traffic going home to HB but not coming in to work. Probably 2-1/2 to 3 hours per day commuting.

Except I don't live in Orange County(nor would I ever). I live in San Pedro, so for me it is about 60 miles of the shittiest traffic known to man.
