Man, I've been tuned to D for so many years I forget. Long before NuMetal. Love the low chug it has.
I started playing in D by tuning my low E string around till I hit a frequency that I liked and sounded right to me when chugging the low E. It was D, so there I stayed.
I have an SG tuned to standard, I never actually play it.
My two 7-strings are both tuned to 1/2 step down, and my Soloist is usually tuned to 1.5 steps down (C# tuning).
Back in the day I used to experiment a little more with alternate tunings, and I came up with the idea of creating tunings that spelled out words. The first, and only one, that I used was my 'daddy tuning': DADDEE. I wrote and recorded the rhythm guitar parts for one song using that tuning, while the leads were recorded in standard tuning. The song actually turned out really well. DADDEE was very cool, because you could create a very Rush-sounding series of opening ringing-string chords that were huge with two E-strings ringing out simultaneously. With the daddy tuning, you could also create interesting closely clustered chords like you'd hear a keyboardist play.
And yes, I was completely sober when I came up with that idea. I think. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]
