Re: speaking of tunings...

I rely on my old Matrix SR-1000. After 18 years it's still very accurate. In a pinch I can get close by ear only.

Here's a good way to Tune the low E string by ear:

Take a song that the guitar starts with a Low E note such as: "Enter Sandman", Hear it in your head and just tune the E to that note! I just hum the tune in my head and I get perfect tuning every time.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">same here. i kinda wish i had a tuner built directly in my head though so i know its exact without even having to hook up to a tuner. im just that lazy.

tuning by ear is another reason NOT to get a floyd rose loaded guitar....its a pain in the ass....i'll never get another floyd loaded guitar again....alright, maybe if i see one for cheap, but otherwise....no. too much things that can go wrong....my philosophy: less moving parts=less trouble

man, i HATE my ears. i couldnt hear it if i play off tune if it kicked me in my face....although its getting better....SLOWLY

I usually use a little Korg tuner. Sometimes I just tune with my ear.

This is going to sound a little weird, but I tune by feel, then I check it with a tuner.
When I tune by feel, I stretch out the strings and if it feels right it's in tune, if it feels too tight it's sharp and if it feels too loose it's flat. I'm right on 95% of the time I would say (after years of playing lead guitar and bending string, it's pretty easy too).
I would like to get one of those rack mounted tuners, but right now it is a hand held Korg tuner for me.
