Who, other than Alienware, builds a quality custom order PC? I've been a Mac user for most of my life, but need to get a new PC and want to go with something a notch better than an off the shelf Sony, HP, etc. , and that doesn't use a lot of proprietary hardware.

Never buy a ready-made from anyone, as you're spending unnecessary money on assembly (manufacturers do their own burn-ins, and most parts-dealers do them as well, so you know you're getting quality parts if you go with a quality dealer).
I get my stuff from www.legendmicro.com - they've got most of the major brand items (boards, etc), and I've found them to be pretty reasonable - been buying from them since my first one in 97
Their other brands aren't bad (I got an SiS board from them when I upgraded my PC - before I had a SuperMicro, but they don't carry that line any more). Intel chips on the board, so who cares who makes it?

Anyhoo, I'd go with them for the board, CPU, RAM, and case, but get your drives direct from the manufacturer if possible (Western Digital and Plextor have their own stores).
Legend also has an online-configurator that lets you piece together a system (or parts of a system) and gives you an accurate price of what it will cost.
