• Guitar shops in Twin Cities MN / Duluth MN

For the supposed "musical hotbed" that is/was Minneapolis, I feel we have a meager music store selection at best.

We have two Guitar Centers, but those are what they are.

I take bass lessons at a store called "My Music Store" in Golden Valley. My instructor is awesome, he just rents the room at the store. The store itself is OK; quite a bit of used stuff, guitars and amps (some vinatge amps); some of it is interesting, some not. Probably not worth driving out of your way for, but if you're in the area, it may be worth a look.

The Music Go Round in Minneapolis is pretty good; nearly all used stuff, and they sometimes have some interesting pieces.

Willie's American Guitars is your best bet for kick-ass vintage Gibsons and Fenders. You won't get any deals there, but bring a bib because I promise you will do quite a bit of drooling.

Hoffman Guitars is an interesting hole-in-the-wall shop; they are probably the best repair shop in the Twin Cities, and make custom instruments as well. They don't have rows and rows of guitars; their selection is quite small, but usually very cool. Mostly acoustics. Very friendly folks there. They have done work for me as well as my brother.

The queen mother of all Minneapolis music stores was Knut Coupee (featured in the movie "Purple Rain"); that has since gone the way of the dodo.

Hope this helps. I am sure some other locals will have some suggestions, too.

Okay, cool. I migh thave to stop by some of those places. I'm out here for the next 2 weeks and I've just been dying to stop off at a Music Store and buy a piece of gear or something (at least play through a loud amp).

Make the rounds of the pawn shops too.
Rice street between 36 and university there are a couple. There used to be more, but Pawn America is taking over.
Then on University, between rice and snelling, there are a couple Cash N Pawns.
There is a small music store on Uni and Fairview, I think.
Go west on Uni and hang a left on cleveland and hit willies and then keep going south on Cleveland, out to Music Go Round in Highland park.
BTW, Willies now carries Charvels.
They dis them, but the sell them.
I've never been to this place, but you might want to check them out.

They're right off of uni and snelling.

Guitar Center in Roseville... sometimes you might find a nice jackson. I picked up a used lightning sky rr1 a few years ago. Otherwise you will find mostly imports. Otherwise you can check out Willie's Guitars. They have a lot of cool vintage stuff.

Does anyone know of any good guitar shops in the twin cities in Minnesota or in Duluth? I'm out here in Wisconsin (nearby Duluth) and I'm taking a trip to the twin cities next week and I want to check out some guitar shops and possibly pick something up out here... Any Minnesota / Wisconsin JCFers know of any good places to go that have reasonable prices?

Hey hey. Music stores in MN just plain suck for the most part. My Apple on University and Snelling is ok. Some pawn shops can be cool too. Your right though, Knute Koupee rocked. As a teen I hung out there alot. I got to play Princes guitars when they came in for repair too. Lots of old San Dimas Jackson's, BC Richs and Kramers-it was great. Lavonnes music in Savage can be cool sometimes if something old is in. There is a place in Mounds View called vintage American guitars that sell Soldano and many other high end amps. And of course there is Willies if you like vintage stuff, but sometimes they will have cool 80's things. Email me and maybe I could show you around some places.
