• eric johnson rocks!!

i saw eric johnson lsat week and he totally rocked the house. even though he's as old as evh, he can still bust it out, but what amazes me is that he plays that fast, that flawlessly with an almost clean, if not, slightly dirty tone. i mean, he lays it on the table. another thing that amazes me about him is that he has one of the most unique styles i've ever heard. across the board there is no one i can name that even remotely sounds like him. hes a complete and utter genius!

He's definitely a great guitarist. A lot of guitarists should listen to him, to learn.

However, he tends to put see asleep. I know he's a great guitarist, but he just kinda bores me.

I saw him 15 years ago then many times after that ...he was a bit boring on the G3

he seemed to have mellowed alot since then...

He used to alyws play his 56 strat now I always see him with a semi hollow...

I talked to him years ago ...that's when I bought a chandler digital echo....they sound like an echolex in a rack..he liked Satch's ....and bought one too.

      very talented and firey player...

One of my all-time favorite players, no question. Saw him live in 1990 and he was incredible. First time I saw him was on Austin City Limits (on tv) and it was simply unbelievable- amazing tone, technique, and speed. You truly have to see him in person to really appreciate him. Also have his one song from Steve Morse's solo album called Distant Star. His voice is somewhat unnerving at first but it grows on you. Ever seen the way he sets up his guitars? Each string is wound differntly on its respective post (ie: through the post, one wind above and three below, etc), only uses a certain kind of battery in his effects (Duracell or Energizer, I believe) and can allegedly tell the difference if someone uses a different kind, stuff like that.

        From an interview I found:

"I use GHS strings, .010 through .046, and instead of wrapping one wrap over the top of the posthole and then the rest down below the hole, I wrap one under and then the rest up to the very top of the peg for the low E and the A. On the D and G strings, I wrap once over and once under; this creates less of an angle at the headstock. Sometimes a severe angle at the headstock can cause tuning problems or breakage. I wrap the B and high E strings all the way to the bottom of the peg, so I don't have to use the string trees, although they're still there. I also put pencil lead in the nut."

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've been looking for a video of that show but can't find one. Austin City Limits has been selling some of their older shows but not that one yet, I don't think. I'd love to see it again.

I live in Austin and have seen Eric Johnson a few times, in concert and at local music stores. Very cool guy, very humble. And very particular about his gear.

Last summer I took my son to see Eric Johnson at a local outdoor show. It was a great time.

Speaking of SRV, I have the Austin City Limits and the VH1 Legends on Video. If I ever figure out how to get it into my computer I'll have it on DVD

I read somewhere that Eric is an extreme perfectionist when it comes to his guitar tone and playing to the point where he won't do a show unless his tone is absolutely perfect! Room acoustics can alter anyone's signature sound. That can make for a very loooong sound check. I love his playing style, just wish he'd crank the distortion up a bit once and a while. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">i kinda like the fact he doesn't crank up the distortion. i guess thats what makes him unique to everybody else. when it comes to sound check, they just had this one guy that came out and played a few licks, but that was about it.

Eric is an awesome guitarist. I've seen him perform in a trio setting a few times, another time as a foursome (with a keyboardist) and my wife and I also got to see Eric do a full solo show, where he played acoustic and then piano on a few tunes. He's an amazingly gifted musician who's really worked his tail off to get to where he's at, musically. I've also been fortunte enough to meet him once and he was very gracious in person, no ego problems for EJ.

what I really like is, he doesn't make many albums. sounds weird, but I really like that. that means he takes the time to do it RIGHT, which means the quality improves... more bands or guitarplayers should do that.
and his way of playing IS unique and his technique seconds that.
