• Damn.

I keep ranting about this new local band and the song they submitted to a local song contest.

Turns out that it wasn't a song contest, but the screening process for a local battle of the bands. Okay, fine, whatever.

Then the guy picks the top nine bands who will compete. I'm thinking, hey, top nine - how hard can it be to make top nine around here? I mean, there are only three, maybe four, who don't suck major ass: how hard can making the top nine be?

Of course the band I was pulling for didn't make the top nine.

    Fucking fucktards.

I'm gonna take my toys and go cry in my lemonade.

Welll, at least you know that if those asswads don't like the band, then the band "must" be good.

        Re: Damn.

I've been around local "Band Battles" for about 20 years and have yet to see one that wasn't "fixed" on some level.

All they usually turn out to be is a stressful but fun experience with a good video to show off with!

Last one I had anything to do with was about 17 years ago, and we worked our asses off for free for second place.

Second place was pretty good, but I didn't think so at the time.

                  Re: Damn.

I witnessed something similar to that a couple of weeks ago.

My friend Tim came into town with his band <http://www.paleonline.com>Pale</a> one weekend. The following Monday, he called me and told me that he was headed over to a coffee house down the street from my place to play an open mic night. When we got there we found out that the guy running the open mic night was making a contest out of it and the top 5 performers would be chosen and out of applause they would win a monetary prize (donated by the patrons) and be invited back to play again.

Well, my other friend Mike and his friend Allison played first. They were pretty good. Then Tim played. Now Tim and I have been friends since kindergarten, and bias aside, I've always thought he was a great songwriter. Tim performed one of my favorites from his former band (with a bunch of my other friends from kindergarten) Paging Raymond. He was clearly one of the best performers that night.

As the night progresses we were subjected to several people who had possibly just picked up a guitar and one of those def-jam poetry sessions. (12 people, thank god my friend Dan called me...)

At the end of the night the guy running things called up who he thought were winners. First he called up Mike and Allison, then he called up some girl from Nebraska, a George Lucas look-alike, and some other guy who was just absolutely terrible. Needless to say, by applause Mike and Allison won the contest.

So as we were leaving, I turned to Tim and said, "I never thought that I'd ever witness a friend being raped. I shed a tear for you Tim-o-tay."

At that point we both went out and had lots of beer.

                    Re: Damn.

That sucks, Tekky. At least your other bud won, instead of the George Lucas look-alike.

Part of what chapped my ass about this deal, is that all through June, the radio station ran commercials that they were having a song contest, and that during july they'd play off the best songs that were submitted during June.

Then July 1 rolls around, and suddenly they say it is actually a battle of the bands. I would screw with a song contest, I wouldn't touch a battle of the bands with a 12 foot pole.
