Re: Bill\'s Place
..You know Tim , I was watching that Vai video thinking the same thing..I mean he just has so much COMMAND of the damn thing. Like he's just simply talking without a crae or thought of technique or anything..Much like Uli..
I still have to go with Uli tho..Maybe my wife has something to do with that. He is the only guitarist that makes her feel like "crying"..Uli is VERY expressive in doing that..his feel is just sick.
There is so many gifted guitarist out there. The ones that made me pick up a gutiar are not really in the calibre as Vai or Uli ..like Iommi and well Eddie..those two alone is why I am here talking to you guys..prolly the same goes for many of us.
OK Ed was very technical..I mean I never heard any guitarist "sound" like that at the time when I was 13. BUT there were "better" players out there. For some reason ..maybe the music wasn't marketable or whatever..Players such as Uli , Schenker , Marino never got noticed..and got this whole "heroe" status..
It was all Ed really since he came out..Randy didn't even hit that status until after he died..
Ed was more of a complete package really it was more than his "playing" it was his tone , his look everything..he sure got noticed fast..
Malmsteen got noticed immediately too and then opened the floodgates with this whole "classical" thing which Uli was doing years before..His first album Earthquake ..well the painting on the cover is called "Rising Force"..
But at the same time as Malmsteen there was players doing and thinking of the same thing at the same time..like Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine..Ynwie just got the jump on them..and he dressed funny to help get "noticed"..and he had a funny name..that's easy to remember.
Alot of these guys were discovereied of Mike Varney...most of these awesome players were just guys sending Varney tapes of themselves and he would put them in bands..Like Malmsteen in Steeler , Kotzen , Tafolla , Billy Sheehan who was going to be the bassist for VH ,but Alex didn't want to steal any more thunder from his bro..
My best freind (Dave) at the time is right next to Ritchie Kotzen from Cleveland Ohio in the Oct 88 Guitar Player and played with Greg Howe and Kotzen for a short stint..even got a Carvin amp deal..which is how I discovered Carvin.
as far as the ultimate guitarist..alot can be put into that category ..and it is all subjective to the listener of who is best..because they are all quite good at what they do.. there is only One Ed..One Vai ..One Eric Johnson..One Malmsteen..One Satch ..One Uli..and many many clones and well..you know..
Of all the guitaris I believe the THREE most inflential was Jimi / Ed / Yngwie..but all had their own influences.
no matter who you like..they are most likely probably from of of those three schools..
Satch and Vai are from the school of Ed..
Marino and Uli are from the Jimi school..
Anyone that does sweeping arpeggios is from the Yngwie school..
I never got that whole Ed and Clapton connection..when I hear Ed..I think Jeff Beck and Not Clapton..but I never read or heard Ed mention Beck..
just some of my thoughts..
