I've realized that as I get older, that I am very picky about what music I listen to. I used to listen to pretty much any metal that was heavy and fast. I didn't discriminate as much as I do now.

my thoughts exactly. back when i started listening to metal, i was all about the speed and heavyness...i didn't care for any melody or decent vocals whatsoever, it had to be fast, faster, and even more brutal....kinda went from metallica to mortician during 1 year.
it wasn't until i became *somewhat* good at playing guitar that i realized there's more to music than just aggression. that's when the whole shred, prog, power, heavy, etc metal thing kicked in...been loving it ever since the only death metal bands i'm listening to are melodic death bands, like arch enemy, carcass, soilwork, at the gates and the likes...other than cannibal corpse, i just cannot stand that constant blasting shit....i happen to like fisher's vox and o'brien's guitar work a lot, that's what attracts me to corpse's music.
ah yeah, and i also like kataklysm - they groove
and that's about as much cookie monster metal i can stand

Yeah, I still listen to Death, Carcass, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, but I can't stand blast-beat, cookie monster shit any more. It's just irritating. There are so many clone bands in every genre. I was listening to random songs from bands on my newsgroup, and someone had posted a huge flood of black metal. I listened to 8 or 9 different bands, and every damn one of them sounded the same. Whatever happened to originality? How do you get a record deal when you sound like everyone else?

I like it all..as long as the guitar really rips..

I just always focused on guitar playing mainly..In whatever context..

I'm pretty open with metal in general..I like it all..I think every style has something cool to offer that I can use ..when I'm writing my own shit..

Even if I don't like a whole album or the vocals..I may hear a riff that sparks and idea..and then I'll run with that idea..

You can tell that in my style...and songs..It's a bit of everything..it's death, thrash, speed and power..no matter how you slice it..it's one cool riff (well I like it ) after another..It's all about the metal..

I like very challeging riffs over fast meters that is very catchy, melodic , aggressive and cohesive..meaning you remeber it after you hear it..anything that does that..I like!

I love Death..I love Control Denied..and stuff like Eidolon, Coroner, Carcass, Symbyosis, Nevermore, King Diamond, Arch Enemy, Exodus, Forbidden, Helstar, Hexenhouse, Momento Mori, Morgana Lefay, Abtrakt Algebra, Apocrypha,Soilwork, Gardenian, Zero Hour, Watch Tower..all these bands have those elements..IMO

I'm listening to the live Dio again. DAMN!!! I gotta say that Holy Diver, and Black Sabbath Heaven & Hell are 2 of my favourite albums of all time.

Dio - just got the live Holy Diver CD, and it's phenomenal. Craig Goldie is a damn good guitar player.
Halford - Crucible and Resurrection are fucking killer CDs
I don't know what pigeonhole they fit into, is it power metal?
