I don't know any "pure" "Estonian"
No one really knows how the "Estonian" looks like.
Originally Estonians are from the Finnish-Hungarian tribe. ALL the other East-Europe countries' people are from the Slav tribes. Estonian language is very similar to Finnish but Estonians look different. Finnish are pretty pure.
Our country has been intependent for a VERY little time.
It has been occupied for centuries by many different countries (Russia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark etc.)
We have been slaves for about 1000 years. And we have mixed with all the ones who have immigrated here (people from the countries who occupied us or workers from other regions such as the Black Sea area).
It's tons of different nations mixed together. No one knows their roots here.

For centuries we have only been doing the following things: very hard work in farms, being slaves, fighting with foreign forces and some have been vikings. That's probably the reason why the people here are very bitter and jelaous

So I did a quick Google, just checked one link. Do you live in the north of Estonia, and if so can you understand Finnish well enough to communicate with the Suomi? The source said your language and Finnish separated less that 2,000 years ago.

Of course English separated from German only 1,000 years ago, so I could see if the languages might not be readily communicable. With English to German, you can look at a German newspaper; you won't likely understand the whole, but you will be able to pick out quite a few individual words. Is this similar?

It also said northern Estonians could understand more Finnish than the southern Estonians. Are they closer, I'd guess, to Finland? This stuff is interesting to me, even though I'm not a cunning linguist!

bro, not even so much. there are shitloads of words that look the same, but have totally different meanings.
example: gift
the german word for gift would be geschenk (=present) or gabe (when talking about e.g. a very gifted guitar player), whereas in germany gift means poison. you get the idea

It's pretty normal that Estonians understand Finnish and Finnish understand Estonian language (even a little bit). We are like brothers, Finland has helped us so much over the years. The language is very similar (Estonian and Finnish is 1000 times more similar to each other than English is to German). Estonian is definetly harder tho (probably the most rules than any other language), Finnish is looser and has a lot of cool and funny words. It doesn't really matter if you are from North or South because the whole country is so little, some US cities are even bigger than Estonia
But some of the southern places and the islands have some old dialects in the language wich most of the people don't use. But it's very rare to hear dialects.

We have 1,5 million people. The biggest city is Tallinn wich population is 400,000. The second largest city is Tartu where lives a little bit more than 100,000 people. The other "big" cities (Parnu, Paide, Rakvere, Haapsalu) population is very small. None of those places have dialects.
300,000 of the people are Russians most of them speak Russian only, because they don't want to learn our language.
Most of them live in the East, big cities like Narva and Kohtla-Jarve have maximum 10% Estonians. There are a lot of Russians and other foreign folks in Tallinn too.

Finnish people are pretty pure, they can speak Swedish pretty well. Helsinki is the probably the only place where the foreign people live.
Finnish is a very strong and healthy country (economy, industry, technology, military etc.) the people are very friendly and cool, sports and music are HUGE there. Finnish are one of the most talented musicians and sportsmen in the world, tons of great bands/players and athletes. And they are fans of big events, ALL the major concerts are ALWAYS sold out. This years GNR's tickets were all sold in 4 minutes.

I forgot one thing, the North Estonian (Tallinn people like myself) maybe speak Finnish a little bit better than the southern folks because we have contact with them everyday.
Everyday thousands of Finnish come here, 90% Finnish have been here and most of them are visiting us regulary.

Hell, you advertise cheap booze and bitches worldwide, you could probably get some more metal musicians moving to Estonia! I hear many say they want to go to Finland for the metal scene, but it sounds like travel between the two is easy. Is it cheaper to live in Estonia than Finland too, or not? get the word out and your drought of bandmates could be over!

The music is the worst in the world in here. Finland is full of talent, 13 year old kids can rip like Yngwie. Estonia only has hacks. With the last year the level has a rised a little bit tho.
We also don't have any good producers and sound engineers. Or high end studios.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to come here because of the music.

Funny you'd say that! I met an old Italian couple visiting from the old country when I was at my sister's in Birmingham after Katrina hit. They didn't speak a word of English, and the closest I have to Italian is a few words of Spanish. But the wife made lasagna, which was nectar of the gods, and indeed she made sure I was stuffed. The husband asked me if I was "Italiano?" so I guess they liked me. I'm part Greek so I guess they saw some Mediterranean features in me. They were the nicest people I've ever met whom I couldn't communicate with! It was all eye contact, smiles and eating primo food!

The relatives who live in B'Ham cook some killer Italian too, but it was really cool to meet that old couple! They were awesomely good people!

Aha, well, I'm Greek, I married an Italian, and I eat very, very well.

Finns are the only one who don't take that gay ass contest seriously, every one of them makes fun of that crap.
One year Startovarius supposed to represent them but they were banned.

Every year the songs are all the same but sometimes there are folks who try to make fun.
One year Germany had something called "Stinky Socks" then one year there was this dude from Austria who did a hilarious song about animals and the chorus sounded like Black Sabbath.
Last year a true 80's type (spandex, big hair, make-up) hair band called Wig Wam played for Norway.
All those funny things end up in the 6th place usually.
Finland tries to go out with heavy bands but they always get banned, but not this year
