  • 'sfunny, I've always thought Flea could groove. I've been saying for years, if you could drop out that offkey whining and the jangly guitar, I could actually quite enjoy RHCP

Muzzy was great. But Doug is a flatout monster. If you can find it, check out the video of the hour-long clinic he put on at Montreux Jazz Festival about 5 years ago. Using loopers and effects, he puts on a show all by hisself.

Getting back to your pud slappers...I have to agree with what you said about Claypool & Flea. I've never liked either of those guys. Now Muzz Skillings and Doug Wimbish - those dudes can move.
Well then, I'll mention it..Doug Pinnick is a GREAT frontman who can write, play and sing very very well..I do have all the Kings X cds of course..and I also have him and Bruce Franklin in Supershine..

      I haven't mentioned alot of dudes I reallly like..that would take some time...hey, I got the time..WTF??!!

      Jimmy hows your boy doin'..

        • Oh..here Ye..BTW.

I posted this crap in the amp section ..WTF..it's news in my camp so..

Well John Comprix of Beyond Fear w/ Ripper Owens is coming over tomorrow night to check out a Uberschall in the flesh..he'll be jamming with Vinny.

He is currently endorsed by Engl and is not satisfied with the Powerball / Fireball..he wants more "brutality"..

He took home a VHT "Deliverance" to try out at rehearsal tonight..neither of us heard that yet..so I'm waiting for his verdict on that one..

He's a pretty lucky fucker..he gets to use any free gear he wants...must be nice..

Bogner just offered him an endorsement deal..so he wants to give this a shot..I think he'll be quite happy myself..

          I'll keep you posted..

          • Flea and Les are awsome in my awsome opinion

Flea is a lucky SOB, because he plays in a very famous band and almost every song is built around his cool bass grooves. He can woodshed in every song. How cool is that. And he has is own style wich he developed in the early 80's. But everyone started copying him and it was a cliche to slap like Flea, and most of the copycats really suck, repeating the same shit all over again. But Flea is very creative and a great songwriter. He actually refused to slap in RHCP's best selling album Blood Sugar Sex Magik because everyone talked about him and copied his style. Flea felt really bad about that, because he knew he wasn't the best player in the world and never wanted to be and there are other dudes who deserve more praise than him. So he said fuggums

Btw. check this out, this is what Flea gave to the world.

Les Claypool is IMO very creative and cool, he is also funny as hell.

I love Muzz and Doug. Doug Wimbish is one of the most versatile players today. He has played funk-metal, hip-hop, jazz, with the Rolling Stones etc.
On his own he does a very cool experimental music. He likes to experiment with different sounds. Doug plays a lot of guitar-like melodies wich are cool, Billy Sheehan plays like a guitar player too when he is soloing, but his stuff gets too repeative and I hate his live tone. Doug is much more interesting as a soloist. But I love Billy though, specially as a songwriter and showman. But generally I don't like when bass is played like a guitar.

Doug Pinnick is great. I'm a King's X fan. Those guys use the "less is more" approach, wich works very well.

I also dug Phil Lynott. Not very technical, but he had a lot of groove. But I usually don't like the sound when bass is played with a pick, too much sharp attack, finger tone is smooth and punchy wich I like.

My favourite players are all groove monsters...guys who have classic funk/soul/r'n'b/motown roots.
Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Bootsy Collins, James Jamerson, George Porter, Rocco Prestia
...also Verdine White, Rodney Curtis, Marshall Jones or some disco dudes like Robert Kool Bell.
..then modern day dudes Marcus Miller, Stuart Hamm, Victor Wooten etc. I listen to them a lot.

I specially like the slaping stuff, bass slaping is the coolest thing ever.

            Jazz/Fusion playing is also amazing.
I like all the oldschool upright bassists.
Then all the classic jazz dudes like Ron Carter.
Fusion, well Jeff Berlin, John Patitucci, Michael Manring are great, I occasionally listen to guys like Steve Bailey too...or Stanley Clarke. Not too much though. I love brazilian jazz and most of the latin players too.

I never was a fan of Jaco Pastorius but I love fretless bass playing, because the fretless sound is just amazing.

Some prog bass players are cool too, Chris Squire, Mike Rutherford or some other old school dudes. I don't like most of the modern prog bassist, can't groove to say their lives, and use those godawful 6 or 7 string basses to masturbate like Yngwie hey shredding is cool, but if you do it in wrong places it ruins the whole "song", but they seem to be more into wanking than the guitar players :ROTF: I dunno, I don't like when bass is used to play anything but what bass is really supposed to be used for.

I love most of the LA, NY and Nashville session aces. Amazing players. I really like Mike Porcaro from Toto. Durning the 80's most of those dudes could slap like maniacs even for the cheesiest pop songs.

My favourite player right now is probably Marcus Miller. Most of his influences are from the jazz/fusion school, but he sounds totally funk himself. One of the best slapers ever. Every groove he plays is very memoriable. He is also very melodic. Awsome tone and he is also a good songwriter. Has played tons of sessions. And his albums are very inspiering, some of the coolest jazz/funk/fusion music made these days.

But my all-time favourite player is Tony Levin. Hands down, the most original and unique player ever!!!
Tremendously amazing feel, groove, tone, style, approach, melody.
Funny thing is that Tony isn't from the funk/r'n'b/soul/motown school, he isn't from the jazz/fusion school and not even from the prog school altho he is mainly known as a prog player because of the sessions and tours with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson.
Tony has always been a classic rock fan, all the blues based riff rock and whatnot. It's kinda interesting because pretty much all rock bassists have a very simple and predictable playing style...and well boring as hell too
So it's pretty funny how Tony sounds anything but a classic rock player
Out of the box bass lines, chapman stick and 8 finger tapping, funky fingers, electric upright bass playing etc. etc. This guy is the pioneer of so many things.

            • I can't believe how similiar Flea and my slappin' tecniches..I never knew that...

E thanks for posting that Video..I was quite surprised..

Tony Levein was my MAIN influence on bass..I been playing bass and listening to Steve Harris and Geezer Butler for years , learning their bass shit..

But when I saw King Crimson "Dicipline" tour in '81/'82..that changed everything ..they way I looked at bass changed forever..I couldn't afford or even find a chapman..so I just adapted Tony's Stick tecnique to the bass..and that was it..

I used to sit so hours on end and tap and slap to presets on my old drum machine..I usualy started some new trick or pattern slow and just turned up the tempo..until I got it really fast..

Yes, Rich..I actually did on the phone already..so he knows I put the Tung Sols in there..that really really do change the color of that amp..

I can "emulate" what it sounded like with the JJ's..sorta..by kicking up the mids and backing off the bass really..

Yeah, it must be nice..John is a geat guy and all..solid player..and can write a decent metal song, that is IMPORTANT..kinda like Jack Frost (Seven Witches) caliber I'd say..he likes my style alot..that's cool..

he'll be here in about an hour..so', I gotta shower and shred a bit..

                      • Dudes I feel so kick ass right now..and I must share my joy with my bros..!!

John Comprix was just here of Ripper Owen's Beyond Fear..he'll be in Europe for over a month, leaving next week..Italy , Germany..Budapest..ect ..NICE!!!

John plays very agressive, much like I do..he's completely blown away by the Uberschall, he stated "he just heard the most brutal amp he's ever heard in his life..period"..I did explain to him about the Tung Sols..I kinda emulated what It sounded like before I installed them..I backed off the bass a tad and pushed the mids up a bit..to give him an idea..he don't give a shit..

I asked him about the VHT Deleiverance..he tried one at rehearsal last night..he said it's cool..but nothing like the Uber..The Uber just has that brutality he's been always searchin' for..he like the Gain dimed too!!

He's calling Bogner tomorrow and ordering a couple for the tour, with four cabs..I guess he's getting a super deal and is going to hook me up with a Uberkab..so that's fuggin' sweet!!

He also wants to record my band in his new studio and let me use his Beyond Fear drummer..he totally offered..he really loves the stuff.. and would like to be involved..

He was vert thankful..for letting him have fun with it..he jammed with Vinny and was rockin' out pretty damn good!!

He was sweep pickin' and shit..dude's been takin' lessons..

He just called me twice on his way to reharsal at Rippers place..and thanked me big time for letting him have at the Uber with Vinny..he sounded KILLER with it..he's having a Halloween Part with Beyond Fear guys and buds and wants me to come over..this could be the beginning of a very good thing..

No, we didn't make out..but we did kick ass..I dig his shit..I was kickin' some ass...dudes' been gettin' seriuous and taking lessons..good player..better than Jack Frost..

He's got my Marshall rig at his house..and says his don't sound like mine..he's got the EL34 version..everyone says that!!

He like the Bogner much better but acknowleges that Marshall is rich for those squeal and whatnot and hides flaws in your playing..where the Uber doesn't..you gotta "work" with the Uber..but when it's workin' and your playin' is on..it kills!!

I'm in a good fuggin' mood..and I might be getting a Uberkab..how cool is that!!!

Later Guys..have a kick ass night..I am..and nothing wiping the smile off this face right now..

Glad you had a good time, Billio. Getting an Uberkab sounds like more than fair payment for your time, and hanging with the band & scoring recording time is awesome. I look forward to hearing the results!

                              Nah..I don't even own a recorder..

I would like to make a video when I'm in a studio..He's building a state of the art Studio with his friend that owns a Chevy dealership..they just bought the building..they'll be using protools and everything..and he's really into my singer and opur tunes..he already called me on his way to pratice.. and asked if he could use Ty to sing..he's got Ripper already..leave my fuggin' singer alone..

He offered up his drummer..so maybe we can work something out..helping each other is cool..musicians should do that I think..he's that kind of dude it seems..he's sincere and actually a better player than I expected by what I heard on the Beyond Fear record..

Actually we were diggin' each other stuff "shit"..when we were jammin' with Vinny..

Vinny isn't shy..John was throwin' down riffs and Vin just jumped right on it..John was smiling..so I knew he was happy..

He really went nuts over the Bogner..more than I expected really..it did sound damn good tonight!!

He owns a Recto and a 5150..and is endorsed by Engl and records and tours with his Powerballs..he doesn't like the fireball..and he tried a VHT "deliverance" which he thought was pretty cool..but when he heard my shit..he just said fuck all that shit..

He was really chuggin' down hard to see if it was tight enough..doin' the fast palm muted quick stops and everytime he did he just said.."fuck, I'm getting this"..

That makes me happy.. he plays alot of nice gear at his disposal..it's cool to see him being this impressed by my amp..

He thought my G major was coloring the amp..I said nope, not at all..just a little delay and a noise gate..I bypassed it just to show him..

Yes I dimed my Gain..he likes it there best too..I'm telling you that's the only way to get it to kick total ass..I also Dimed the Bass just to show there is ZERO farting or flubbing..it's a fartless amp..you can't make it fart if you tried..and I tried!
