..You know Tim , I was watching that Vai video thinking the same thing..I mean he just has so much COMMAND of the damn thing. Like he's just simply talking without a crae or thought of technique or anything..Much like Uli..

I still have to go with Uli tho..Maybe my wife has something to do with that. He is the only guitarist that makes her feel like "crying"..Uli is VERY expressive in doing that..his feel is just sick.

There is so many gifted guitarist out there. The ones that made me pick up a gutiar are not really in the calibre as Vai or Uli ..like Iommi and well Eddie..those two alone is why I am here talking to you guys..prolly the same goes for many of us.

OK Ed was very technical..I mean I never heard any guitarist "sound" like that at the time when I was 13. BUT there were "better" players out there. For some reason ..maybe the music wasn't marketable or whatever..Players such as Uli , Schenker , Marino never got noticed..and got this whole "heroe" status..

It was all Ed really since he came out..Randy didn't even hit that status until after he died..

Ed was more of a complete package really it was more than his "playing" it was his tone , his look everything..he sure got noticed fast..

Malmsteen got noticed immediately too and then opened the floodgates with this whole "classical" thing which Uli was doing years before..His first album Earthquake ..well the painting on the cover is called "Rising Force"..

But at the same time as Malmsteen there was players doing and thinking of the same thing at the same time..like Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine..Ynwie just got the jump on them..and he dressed funny to help get "noticed"..and he had a funny name..that's easy to remember.

Alot of these guys were discovereied of Mike Varney...most of these awesome players were just guys sending Varney tapes of themselves and he would put them in bands..Like Malmsteen in Steeler , Kotzen , Tafolla , Billy Sheehan who was going to be the bassist for VH ,but Alex didn't want to steal any more thunder from his bro..

My best freind (Dave) at the time is right next to Ritchie Kotzen from Cleveland Ohio in the Oct 88 Guitar Player and played with Greg Howe and Kotzen for a short stint..even got a Carvin amp deal..which is how I discovered Carvin.

as far as the ultimate guitarist..alot can be put into that category ..and it is all subjective to the listener of who is best..because they are all quite good at what they do.. there is only One Ed..One Vai ..One Eric Johnson..One Malmsteen..One Satch ..One Uli..and many many clones and well..you know..

Of all the guitaris I believe the THREE most inflential was Jimi / Ed / Yngwie..but all had their own influences.

no matter who you like..they are most likely probably from of of those three schools..

Satch and Vai are from the school of Ed..

Marino and Uli are from the Jimi school..

Anyone that does sweeping arpeggios is from the Yngwie school..

I never got that whole Ed and Clapton connection..when I hear Ed..I think Jeff Beck and Not Clapton..but I never read or heard Ed mention Beck..

    just some of my thoughts..

I hear a lot of Allan Holdsworth, Billy Gibbons, Uli Jon Roth, Frank Marino and Jeff Beck in EVHs playing but he only mentions Clapton as is influence. Funny, I don't hear ANY Clapton is Eddies playing.

I think Ed was BSing us with the Clapton influence. I know DLR said they covered Catch Your Train by Uli-era Scorpions when they were still a kegger band, so there's Uli. I hear a bit of Blackmore in some of his "outside" lead phrasing, as well as the others you mentioned. Endrik. I think Ed figured people would be that much more blown away by him if he mentioned an influence that was bland in comparison. That would make it seem like he had ALL those ideas on his own.

Ed used to do the "Aw, shucks" thing when he started out, and I think that was BS too. A few years later he started complaining about everyone ripping him off. He should be thrilled that everyone wanted to copy him.

And they did..hell we all ripped of Ed..We wouldn't be playing all these high gain amps , floyd Rose dive bombs , tapping and shredding with custom painted geetars..

He should be happy ..but he's not.

I remember reading he slowed down Cream albums and learned Clapton solos note for note..that may have been true when he first started playing..

I wasn't aware that VH played any Scorpions stuff..wow ..I have alot of old bootlegs when Eruption didn't have the tap ending..I heard some James Gang , Summertime Blues , and stuff like that..I didn't think he even knew who Uli was..

I think he was a innovator and took the ball and ran with alot of ideas..did he come up with the idea..prolly not..just took it and ran with it and made it his..

Well Iommi and Ed both inspired me to play but I really don't sound like either..maybe a little here and there..I got my own gig goin'..which is no big deal really..but it doesn't sound like them..

Iommi threw a fit when VH opened for them and said that punk was ripping him off.

I remember reading long ago when Ed discovered Tapping ..he would turn his back to the audience so nobody can see what he was doing..I believe that..but that trick got out quick..and everybody and there momma was tapping then..some guitarist based their entire career on it..Sheehan , Stanley Jorden , Vitto Bratta , Steve Lynch to name a few..they also took that technique and ran with it..some were actually more advanced than Ed..with the Tappin'..Like Steve Lynch and Jeff Watson..who took it to another level with 8 fingers..who didn't try that!?

We all steal from eveyone I guess and make it our own for the most part..or try to.

Ed and Billy Sheehan started tapping at the same time, no one knows who was the first. I know that Billy learned tapping from Billy Gibbons, you know that single blues-bend tap that Gibbons did, Sheehan liked that and played it on his bass, later he discovered that he could tap more notes and developed his sick style. I don't know who influenced Eddie to tap, I think it was also Billy Gibbons because Van Halen is influenced by ZZ Top, they use a lot of rhythms and chords progressions as ZZ Top did. I'm pretty sure it was Gibbons, he influenced a lot of players, all those squeals that George Lynch, John Sykes and Zakk Wylde do are because of Gibbons, heck thanks to him I even started to play guitar.

I influenced Eddie to tap. Regardless of what you hear, it was me. He saw me tapping on my Fisher Price guitar back in 1973 and ran with my idea.

Yes E , that right..That's prolly why Alex didn't want Sheehan in the band because he would have stole some thunder away from Ed..so he just wanted a bassist to hold down the forte..Mike was a good choice..

It would have been very interesting if Billy came out in that camp in 1978..

Me as a bass player ..that would have changed some things for me I'm sure..

I didn't start to develope my style on my until I saw Tony Levin slappin' and tappin' on a Chapman stick in early 82 with King Crimson..

                      I couldn't afford or find a chapman..so I just applied THAT to bass...BOOM...done deal.

I guess Stu Hamm had the same idea too..I play more along those lines than Sheehan..

                          that's a Dokken song, right?

I think many people overlook Gary Moore's influence. Remember, when he came into Thin Lizzy, it was kind of like Vai joining Whitesnake (or Kotzen joining Poison? ). They had always had great guitarists, but now they'd recruited an allstar quarterback to take their game to a new level.

I can't listen to guys like Vivian Campbell or John Sykes without hearing Gary's playing all over. And everytime I hear Unchain The Night, I want to sing the choruses and closing solo to Hold On To Love which, of course, was released 2 years prior to Under Lock & Key, but no one outside of the guitar fraternity in the US knew who Gary was. Gary Moore was VERY influential (well to me) ..he would have been MUCH more so if he'd joined Ozzy's band..Like Ozz intended..before he found Randy..

Gary stated that Randy ripped off solos/riffs from him..such as the Mr. Crowely solo..which his excerpts of his various riffage..I never saw that connection..but I'm sure its there..somewhere.

I had his intro solo to End Of The World pretty nailed..I must brush on that one..
