Re: Tekky!!!- Ditka to run for senate.

I guess the resident JCF swingers won't be be running for public office, either. oke:

Yeah, Tekky, it's kind of sad that this was an issue to begin with. I could care less what the guy and his wife (...and others? ) might do behind closed doors, as long as they're all consenting adults. But we hold our public officials to a "higher moral standard", don't we? The media is all over this crapola as a "scandal". But when most all public officials relentlessly whore themselves for personal and corporate campaign contributions (with payoffs in return, of course), it's usually back page news, not to be paid attention to. I actually wrote about this on my site yesterday. It's not definte yet. The GOP is looking at riding Da Coach's popularity because they panicked over a bogus scandal with their last candidate Jack Ryan.

Jack Ryan was married to actress Jeri Ryan. (Star Trek) In their divorce papers (which Jack wanted to keep private) Jeri stated that he made her go to strip clubs and asked her to have sex in front of strangers. This is what the GOP and the press call a scandal? What did he do wrong? Sure he's a little kinky, but so what! I'm sure more than half the senate have bigger skeletons in their closets.

If Da Coach does decide to run, come on up Tommy, there's more than plenty room for the Atomic Noodle-boy here in the Windy City!

[/ QUOTE ]

That "scandal" was such a joke.... He got blackballed for wanting to have sex with his wife? She turned him down so not only blackballed he got blueballed too

Well, it's not as clear-cut as that. The circumstances behind it are a bit out of the norm. It seems that he pressed and pressed. To some it would be akin to mental abuse.

But as Pat said, we tend to hold our politicians to a higher moral standard. I personally think it's a load of road apples.

Da Coach stopped in my wifes store a couple of months ago. He just picked up his Indian motorcycle from the store across the street. Did his photo opp and took off on his merry way. He does stop in when his bike is in the shop. Although, now that Indian is DOA, I don't expect to see him much more. Here's an article from today's Chicago Tribune. I think it's right on the money...

[ QUOTE ]
A run by Ditka would have been fun but brutal

By John Kass
Chicago Tribune, Published July 15, 2004

So Mike Ditka finally got smart and informed Republican leaders he won't be a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Of course, he could abruptly change his mind tomorrow. He is, after all, Ditka.

It would have been a great story, Ditka campaigning, all the Ditkaisms, Ditka fighting his campaign manager on the sidelines, the old Chicago Bears politicking across the state, every news conference beginning with the immortal words, "In life ..."

But I'm glad he's out of it, for his sake. Good for him.

In football, they brutalize your body. In politics, what is brutalized is what is inside your heart. Once that's gone, once there is hardly anything left inside of you to hurt, then you're finally one of them. You've made the team. Congratulations.

As a Ditka fan, I love that highlight of Ditka as a Bears tight end, running over people, refusing to go down. And from his first day as Bears head coach, we fans figured he had the will to drag the Bears to the Super Bowl and win it or die.

I don't know Ditka. I've never met him. But I like the gruff public Ditka, the guy who'll have a drink or five and a cigar and not apologize for it, the straight-talking, "Who you crappin'?" Ditka.

He appealed to panicky Republican bosses searching for a candidate because he appealed to so many folks.

He's not a weasel, and there are so many weasels in public life. They are clever and witty, and they strike from the side or from behind. They cover their mouths when they twitter, even in print. Ditka doesn't twitter. This astounds and threatens the twittering class.

And just the idea of Ditka confronting the squirrelly Ted Kennedy types in the Senate was attractive.

A conservative Ditka candidacy would also have forced Barack Obama, the anointed one, to actually campaign for the Senate rather than wait for more air kisses from Hollywood liberals and the Eastern press, the Midwestern press, the Western press.

So Obama prepares to deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, and Illinois GOP leaders might be desperate enough to call Eddie Vrdolyak's Cicero to see if somebody's available.

The buzz earlier Wednesday was that Ditka had been told that if he persisted in a possible candidacy, his life would be examined in excruciating detail, not only by Democrats, but by Republicans too.

In fact, it had already begun. Questions were being researched, such as:

How did Ditka's restaurants get their liquor licenses? Were political connections involved? Who were his partners, his business investors, what were their political connections and did they have other, earthier associations?

He would have had to disclose his net worth, and there would have been questions about his personal life.

"He'll have to go through a serious background check, and I don't know if he truly understands how deep it will go," state Sen. Kirk Dillard, the DuPage County Republican chairman, told me earlier Wednesday.

"He'd help us with working families, with Reagan Democrats. But he'd have to go through the background check, and no one knows what that will turn up, and we'll have to know before I consider him," Dillard said.

Ditka probably didn't like that. But anyone who may someday sit in the U.S. Senate and recommend federal prosecutors in our thoroughly politically corrupt state must understand this is necessary.

In football, coaches have game plans and decide what plays they'll run in certain situations against specific personnel.

There are also game plans in politics. Yet in politics, you as the candidate might operate from one game plan, while the wise guys on your team operate from another, the one they didn't tell you about.

Later, you're out front under hot lights and they're quietly behind in the steakhouse shadows, counting their money, telling jokes. Unfortunately, you can't appreciate the subtlety until after your head's been knocked off.

Ask the former Illinois bipartisan combine boss Gov. George Ryan about it when he stands trial next year. Ask the current, one-term Gov. Rod "The Unreformer" Blagojevich, after the federal grand juries are done with his Health Facilities Planning Board.

Both politics and football require trickery, viciousness and willpower. Both refer to leadership.

In sports, leadership is about some internal, almost spiritual demand for physical excellence, unknowable for most of us because something in most of us prevents our reaching out that far.

Leadership in Illinois politics isn't about excellence. It is a tribal art practiced by men with soft hands. They lead by consensus, and consensus is measured by who gets what and how much.

Ditka doesn't need a political life. And he hasn't spent decades planning for the scrutiny.

So, good for you, Coach. It would have been fun. But you made the right call.
