    So that crap that you wipe off the tip onto the wet sponge/towel... is it safe to throw away? I am guessing it's non-toxic to throw away in the regular garbage, otherwise there'd be tighter restrictions surrounding the use/sale of solder.

      I have one of those cold heat things. I tried to use it on my guitar to re-wire a pickup. Here is my review in two words: Sucks Balls. It just kinda spits a little spark, and barely melts a tiny little wad of solder. Save your money. I just use a normal Weller soldering iron that i filed down the tip of- its real fine and makes it easy to get around in the guitar cavity.
