    Re: Operation Mindcrime 2?

Well, I didn't see them live with Kelly so you
would know. I just saw their concert on some music show; he wasn't impressive, but he seemed good enough that you'd think he'd be capable of learning DeGarmo's parts properly.
He just didn't even bother to try and play the DeGarmo solos. Oh well, he obviously didn't add any creativity to the band so I'm glad he's gone for that reason.

I saw them perform with Dream Theater here in Chicago. I thought Kelly was fine, but you have to admit, he's got some relatively big shoes to fill. DeGarmo may not be the best guitarist in the world, but he wrote a big part of one of Rock/Metal/Prog's best albums. Then for him to take such a bold step as to work with the group to write and record a follow-up to that album takes a lot of guts. Just by calling it Operation: Mindcrime II puts a whole lot of expectations on it.

        Re: Operation Mindcrime 2?

I agree. I have a lot of respect for Mike as a guitarist, but Tekky is right. Operation Mindcrime needs to be a prog rock album anything short of that will be aweful. They haven't writen a good proggersive album since then (Empire was great, but that's when they started getting a little more mainstream). I hope Mike can help add to a prog rock type album. He's not DeGarmo, but he is a way better fit than Kelly Grey ever was. I really want this to work, We'll see.

TEKKY, the guy on the recent tour with Dream Theater is Mike Stone. Kelly Gray's been gone since before Tribe was recorded, I guess almost 2 years now. Mike Stone has been with them from recording Tribe onward, even though DeGarmo participated in that album. Kelly Gray was only on Q2K and the recent live DVD retrospective, I think.

Thanks, I think I got confused with everyone throwing the names around. All I knew about him was that he certainly wasn't DeGarmo.

Hell Yeah! Its great having someone on the inside. I'm sure this will be no small undertaking. Lets just hope there is a t least a little of that prog vibe to it!

I'm a little dubious of the concept, but I'll check out the album, regardless. OpMindCrime is one of my alltime favorites. Don't know what happened after Empire, but it seems like their songwriting ability went rapidly downhill, even before DeGarmo left.

A new thought (not a worry) I have had is the orchestration of the new album. Kamen had a certain signature which fit perfectly with Operation:Mindcrime. Sad he is gone.
