I usually just make up sh!t on the spot, I do a lot of chunking, and misc. random scales to hear the range of the amp.Comment

I also have a tendency to go "blank" at a store. The first things I will do will be standard warmups and drills. Working on alternate picking steady lead type things. Riff wise I'll play my own stuff. If I get around to actual songs I tend to play some stuff that I know most people wouldn't have any idea what they were hearing.
Every now and then I'll play Enter Sandman as a swing just for laughs.Comment

I mostly improvise, but I try to hit every note in different playing techniques to hear how does it sound.
If trying the amp, I have to try the bottoms, highs and mids. That's essential.Comment
