Re: No More Toys?

Every Toys r' us store I've been to sucked. They have good stuff and higher prices but man, whoever put the floor plans together should be shot. Narrow isles, cramped no, flow for shoppers etc. I guess its fine if there is only 3 or 4 people in the store but damn...impossible to get shopping carts through the place. I usually end up at one of them around Christmas time looking for something that I didn't get at wal-mart or target. Every time I come outta there I feel like killing a giraffe I say I'll never go back in one them again, very frustrating experience every damn time

It seems that for most items, price tends to be the bottom-line for most Americans. The airlines are learning this - look at the precarious states of United, Delta and American as compared to Southwest, Frontier and Alaska, for instance. So it's not surprising that Wal-Mart extends its market share. Monopoly, anyone?
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

Wal-Mart has forced Levi's into trouble as well. My guess in a few years, it will all be Wal-Mart and Target.

Re: No More Toys?

Certainly everyone has the right to choose or snub Wal-Mart, but realize that not everyone makes enough money to afford to snub them.
Don't look down on those who basically have no choice but to shop there; you wouldn't want to be an economic elitist, would you?

As for China, it's trade or war between us; don't delude yourself that there's a 3rd option. Since they have several hundred ICBMs
and probably 50 million reservists that culd be called up, I choose trade, not war.

Re: No More Toys?

i'm not looking down on their shoppers at all. i just disagree with their policies on what they will and will not carry in their store, and the motivation (religious beliefs) behind those decisions. that's fine though; they can run their business however they want, and i can choose not to shop there. however, ya gotta admit that it's kinda odd that you can buy guns in may wal-marts, but not rolling stone magazine.

however, i shop at target all the time; hell, i'm probably there 3-5 times a week. most of the time they have better deals on groceries than grocery stores, and i like the ability to do most of the shopping in one place.

ahhh, freedom of choice; the american way. for at least a little bit longer!

Lerx,
I'm not looking down at anyone at all. I just hate to see only a few options. It is like that with all the music stores now too(guitar and cds). I still shop at Target , and Wal-Mart when I have to. Hell my sister in law works there now.

WHAT?!! What is this about Levi's? I ONLY wear Levi 501s. Oh man. Say it isn't true. If they go out of biz.. oh it would be bad.

I didn't know there was any sort of religious anything having to do with Wal-Mart or stores like them. Though I did buy a CD at Wal-Mart one time and all the lyrics were bleeped out. Hmmm... That is LAME, not to mention rude. Waste of a CD. I won't shop there.
But Target (or Tarjay as I call it) I freakin' love. I love Target. I love how it smells and all that red and the funky patterns and the pretzels... I shut up now. Maybe its just me.
Oh wait... doesn't Sully like Target too? LOL!

Re: No More Toys?

yes. yes i do indeed.

the whole wal-mart religious thing, i guess is more of a "morality" thing... which i guess is a religious thing. as mentioned, they don't carry rolling stone mag, and many other mainstream magazines, but i believe you can get a copy of guns and ammo. they'll refuse to carry certain albums in their store because they disagree with the content, or they demand censored versions (which i'm actually okay with, provided you can tell the difference between the two and make your own decision on what you're purchasing). because of their size, they can get away with this kinda crap; in rural areas, wal-mart is often the only real store around.

their pharmacy also won't carry what's called "emergency contraception," also known as "the morning after pill" because they believe it's an abortion pill. it's not. it's ovral or lo-ovral (birth control pills) in higher dosages. if you get pregnant and take the morning after pill, guess what? you're still pregnant. their belief (even in the face of plenty of actual real data proving otherwise) is that it prevents implantation, which in their mind is like abortion. it doesn't prevent implantation; it suppresses ovulation, which is what the regular plain ol' birth control pill does.

...yet they carry regular birth control pills.
if they refused to carry any birth control whatsoever, that's one thing; at least they're consistent. but that's not the case.

anyway, those are my main reasons of my wal-mart spite.

Re: No More Toys?

Sully - take the sale papers from other grocery stores to WalMart and they'll match the prices (National brand for National brand, Store brand for Store brand).

And WalMart has for years not carried Levi's jeans because the other stores in town carried them, but they did their own lines like Faded Glory, and they carried Wrangler.
I was in last week and they had a GENUINE Levi Strauss denim jacket First Levi's item I'd seen in WalMart since 90 anyway.

I don't wear Levi's jeans anyway - they never fit me properly. However, with WalMart jeans (or anything) you have to get one-size larger because they'll shrink up one size (even the so-called "pre-shrunk" stuff).

Wal-Mart - Microsoft - it's the same thing; they saw a market and nailed it. K-Mart had issues that resulted in their demise, as did Toys-R-Us, TG&Y (Toys Games & YoYos), and all the other shops that fell apart. Oneof those issues was the inability to compete in a price war. Yes WalMart is probably the single largest importer of Chinese/Indonesian junk, but you don't have to buy it. Yes it's nice to have an Apex DVD player for $150 over a Pioneer for $400, but the Apex has a small buffer and will drag on every disc (I know, I have one). BUT it could play VCD, MP3, CD-R/RW, and other such discs WAAAAAY before Pioneer's model could.
Still, it drags in places.

Wal-Mart's not a bad place if you're "in-and-out" - get what you came for and go home - but I do also find issue with their music department: Britny's ok but Black Sabbath ain't!? I can find the Britny Does Boston DVD but can't find the Black Sabbath Boxed Set (even Hasting's doesn't have it).
And the censorerd/edited versions that WalMart carries do indeed suck (World Needs a Hero had a Band-Aid on it ), but if your kid came home with a CD that was spewing out "mutha fukka" and "b1tch" and all that other crap, AND you didn't want your children listening to it, you'd be upset with WalMart (which is why they have the Edited versions). I've seen hindreds of people returning tapes and CDs that had foul language on it that their kids bought both at WalMart AND major record stores.
They do pretty good with the video game ratings, though it took them forever to get DOA Extreme Volleyball in.

It's going to come to the point where CDs and such will either have similar ratings on them so the cashier knows to check the kid's ID, or they're going to stick with the Edited versions.

Newc
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

eh, i don't really care about the price matching; i don't want to haggle over raisin bran, ya know?

i also don't really mind the censored versions of CDs too much, provided they're marked as such. they're also not the only place that does this. as a parent, i look at the discs my son wants. if it's stickered, he's not getting it.

Wal-Mart does have an "Edited Version" sticker on the censored albums. Ironically, they didn't bother to censor Brides of Destruction,
at least not the copies in the store when it first came out. I didn't get it because of the feedback from here, and because they're not really my cuppa tea anyway. BTW BOD has sold a little more than 37,000 to date. By comparison Tesla's over 141,000 for their new one.
