      Newc to your point about Eddie and Clapton I have to say that CLAPTON SUCKS! Everything he's done since Cream has been "safe" and lame. I fell for his most recent release - the tribute to Robert Johnson - what a letdown. If it wasn't for a great backing band it would have been unlistenable. Clapton is Muzak.

      While I'm on a role and being needlessly critical, I have to add that SANTANA SUCKS MORE THAN CLAPTON - at least Clapton kicked ass in Cream - Santana has never kicked ass.
      I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

        Yes Page is sloppy as hell...but it's the passion that comes out of his playing that puts him at God-like stature.
        Same with EVH....so he's a showoff. It's the indivduality of each of these so-called God-like players that put them where they are. EVH wasn't doing "Clapton" just as Jimmy Page wasn't doing "EVH"...I don't really see a fair comparison here.

          No offense Newc...But, Eddie is the Man! Often immitated, never duplicated. Are there better guitarist out there...probably. I mean this with no disrespect, but would you like to compare resumes with Eddie? I've seen him play with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar...old and new...and he rocks on solo and rhythm.

                  Go back and listen to every Zeppelin solo and count how many had BAD mistakes/flubs, and compare that number to the ones that had only minor issues like a string slip or unintended open string. I don't mean Song Remains The Same, when they were tired and stoned, I mean the studio tracks. I get so tired of everyone basing their review of Page on that ONE live show. You're saying I haven't listened to EVH's playing? YOU guys have not heard HALF of the Zeppelin catalog - yes that includes the acoustic stuff that doesn't have distortion and whammy bars.

                  And Santana had the tone, man. I didn't care for the Latin rhythm stuff, but his tone, as well as his note selection, was the greatest.

                  As for Holdsworth - I never heard his work that I'm aware of, but from what I understand he was some sort of Jazz player?

                  Clapton played what he knew, and didn't try to take the spotlight off the song and be a shred hero (after Cream, anyway).

                  And it's not the individuality of those players that gives them their "God" status, it's their musical and style contributions:
                  -Iommi showed us a thing called Metal (as well as a little Pop, Folk, Classical, Jazz, and Blues)
                  -Clapton showed us white boys what most of us were missing out on in our white suburban world
                  -Hendrix showed us how to play White Boy Rock with a Black Man's Soul.
                  -Page showed us how to be the guitarist in a band, and how not to be just the "special guest" that also plays rhythm

                  What did we learn from EVH? That tons of Flash is the same as one ounce of Talent.

                    Everybody took "something" from ED ...whether you want to believe it or not ..

                    Zakk , Vitto Bratta , DiMartini , Gilbert , Vai , Satch , Petrucci , Romeo , Marino , Jake , Randy , Nuno , George Lynch , Oliva and just about every shredder known to mankind took "something" from Ed ...there is no denying it ...these are facts ..if you like it or not.

                    You're Jealous or something to use this much energy to discredit ...the undiscreditable ...

                    in short ...you're pissing into a fan and gettin very wet...which I think is very amusing...!

                    he was called by PP Toucher Michael Jackson himself in his prime of popularity and called ED to put a solo in Beat it...nobody else ...Eddie ...and when you heard that song for the very first time ....you were amazed ...admit it!!!

                    Listen silly ass ....I was in a Van Halen tribute and we played 40 VH tunes all DLR era ...we dissected every little facet of his playing ...very demanding stuff indeed...

                    you execute "any" of his stuff ....post it on the board and we'll take you more serious ...because then at least you can back it up ....until then you're just blowing your "usual" smoke ...which is not a bad thing ...I always find your "smoke" quite enteraining like a Benny Hill episode..!!!

                      I heard "Beat It" when I was 4 years old, and I was probably too young to appreciate the solo. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] That was about as much Van Halen I've ever heard except for "Jump" and "Hot For Teacher" on the radio and TV. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

                        I never got the Ed and Clapton connection myself ...me being a major Ed disciple I always heard more of a Beck flavor in his pl;aying myself

                        Clapton ..slow box blues box patterns that any 50 year dweeb plays today...maybe that's more your speed perhaps ..

                        NEWC ...here's the problem I'm detecting ...Ed's playing is wayyyyyyyyy over your head ...so much that you don't get it ...to you it's noise ...because you have "No" comprehension of how or what he's doing ...even 25 years later ...it's OK ...just keep playing blues licks dude ...but don't knock the unknockable...

                        he's obviously way beyond your abilities ...because I heard this same arguement years ago only once buy a dude ...well he played ....hmmmmm....blues and stuff from a mel bay book ...

                        Clapton didn't write 80% of his popular catalog ...he covered most of his most known stuff from some other blues dick ...After Midnight , Cocaine and many many more was NOT Clapton songs dude ....he didn't write those stupid songs (he covered them!!!!!!...which is even more sad..IMO

                          Hey bro, I like guitars and music and all, but I think you need some more constructive activities in your life than sitting around dissecting famous guitar players. Start a band, buy a dog or a goldfish, get a girlfriend, paint your garage, whatever...

                              Thank you Box ...I have alot of time on my hands but unlike NEWC ..

                              I give credit to great players not knock them ...

                              Jerry Cantrell ...I think he's a very good player not awesome ...but I'll never knock him ...he also worshipped ED and they became very good freinds...

                              Facelift / Dirt / III / SAP / JOF and his solos stuff are genius albums ..and groundbreaking as well ...very unique his approach and style ...he gave credit where credi is due..

                              Man there is only one Eddie Van Halen ....only one !

                              Funny thing is the players that NEWC was inspired by were probly very influenced by ED ...

                              NEWC doesn't sound very versed in the great players that is out there like I am ...he didn't even know who Allan Holdsworth is ....there ya go....
