    hey did you know that Cleveland ranks number one in the nation for Poverty ...just saw the good news on TV...I'm sure glad I got my money ..now these human turds want to take it ...I'd wipe my ass on a dollar before I give it to a human turd...but that's just me.

    Kerry wants to miraculously cure this by raising minimum wage ...hmmmmm....stupid ass ...if that happends ..EVERYTHING goes up across the board ...stupid asses..it's all ratio now isn't it...DUH!!!!!!

    I love making fun of the poor ...really me and the family drive downtown on Sundays just to give Bums the finger and throw peanuts at them....it's a blast!!! [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

              Newc,
              you were brave to write your opinion, and of course you are entitled to it (however wrong it might be). Half of Ed's appeal, in my opinion, is not his technical ability (although his is great) - it is his vibe. I could listen to him play very simple, non-melodic stuff and I'd still love to hear just his vibrato, his phrasing, etc.

              Anyway, like I said, you took a stand and should at least be respected for that (even though I couldn't disagree with your opinions more).

                      Yes, it was a a joke - do you think I'd have gone out and bought VH1 through 1984 at the same time JUST to sit through each song waiting for the solo so I could dissect it if I thought it sucked? No, I'd just say it sucked and not listen to it because it sucked so much.

                      No worries Bill - I am not interested in learning Eruption or any other VH songs - I learn FROM them, but I don't learn the songs themselves because there's no need to.

                        Gotcha ...I'm strictly a "Original" player too...besides learning all the bass lines for the old VH tribute (boring)

                        I never sat down and learned a song in my life ..never had the desire to.

                        I don't want to play other peoples crap ..I make up my own crap. I just absorb their influence and inspiration.
                        I just regurgitate what kind of stuff I like....and I like a lot of different kinds of metal ...it's all over the map really.

                        Van halen is just one small element to the big picture for me

                        but he did get me started and for that alone ...I thank him. But he's not doing so good ...not for a long while ..I lost interest in him these days ...but I do love the old stuff ...lots of fire ...I love that!

                          Wow! What a relief! And I thought I was the only one!!

                          I honestly don't know how to play any VH songs front to back. I don't know how to play "Over The Mountain" or "Flying High Again"...I have never had the desire to learn. I am just NOT a cover band guitarist. If I had to learn 4 sets of covers right now to join some band, I would die tryin.

                          I can play certain tunes by other people just because I've heard them so many times, but I'm sure they are wrong...and again, I could care less!

                            VH1 is a testament in itself. I can still listen to that whole album and not be bored one bit. When you are a ground breaker, people will always come along and put a new spin on what you did or do it faster, but remember, groundbreakers did it first. People aren't as mezmorized with Hendrix as they were, and say people are doing better stuff than he did back then, but when he came out he totally and completely blew away ANYTHING that was going on at the time.

                            As far as EVH learning all of Clapton's solos, I am not exactly sure what that is supposed to mean. I did a boat load of Clapton stuff in my Classic Rock band and it got stale after a while.

                            I will never take anything away from Page. I think the stuff he wrote still holds up today and IMHO blows away all the new BS on the radio today BUT, he was a very sloppy player and it isn't just one live performance. It is all over all his albums. He produced all the stuff so it was his say on what take got put to album. Any other producer would have made him do alot of that stuff over.

                              I'm with Chuck, 100%! But i did have to learn boatloads of cover tunes back in the day, but I always put my own spin on them, never note for note, ever, I just refused to do so.

                              Since I picked back up a few years ago, I haven't learned one new cover tune, or tried anyway, it's been 100% original, but I've got a lot of EVH and Lynch in my style of playing...

                                I played primarily cover stuff, and learned a number (far from all) of VH's early stuff note per note, along with a lot of other hard rock and metal from the mid-70s through the early 90s. Here's what I find about original vs. cover band players:

                                The cover guys can learn other people's songs pretty easily; after awhile you get used to breaking the stuff down. HOWEVER, it's a LOT
                                harder to write anything, because once you come up with a riff and play it a few dozen times, you realize where it came from, filtered through your subconscious. Then you feel like you're plagarizing and drop that idea.

                                Those who play only original and feel they "can't" learn cover songs, they just don't want to put that effort into it; they could do it if they tried, BUT would rather put that effort into writing their own instead.

                                I personally envy those who can write prolifically, but it IS cool at parties to sit with a guitar and take requests and play 90% of what people call out to you. If you're solo, with only a guitar, they put up with the old 8 bars and into the solo thing too!

                                Still not sure if Newc was really joking though; he's bagged on Ed before!
