Lenny's not a real guitar hero; he plays rhythm while he sings, and has a lead player,
though he does a couple of solos. It's not really fair to him to be compared to Hendrix or Prince regarding his playing.
He needs to send Foghat a check though for "Are You Gonna Go My Way"!
Greg Howe is black? Holy hell, learn something every day. Speaking of black guitar players, I can't remember the guys name, but from **** I can't even remember the bands name, Cult of Personality is the song, and ah okay Vernon Reed I think it is. He's killer.
Yeah, rocking out without any cord going into that Flying V!

Omigod.. you know what!!!? I noticed that too!!
This must be the next step up from air guitar.
Gotta be proficient holding the real axe first and THEN you plug in. Right? Am I right?

Wasn't he rocking out in a Target commercial recently? He was all over the keys and the gee-tars.

You don't REALLY think that they weren't recording that commercial live in a Target, do you? Would they lie to us like that?
Lenny Kravitz is a true rock star, plain and simple. He is also a wise man. Yay Lenny Kravitz. I haven't bought one of his CD's since "Are you gonna go my way", but I do like the fact that the man can live bigger than life and still be a man(good to his friends and children).
Vernon Reid.........hmmmmph....I always got the impression that he never really had a clue as to what he was doing playing his free jazz/har rock solos. I really just figured he was just playing fast simply to play fast with little or no thought about whether he was even playing in the right key. Then I read an interview from WAYYYYY back and the interviewer basically put him on the spot asking him, "you know, some people think that you haven't a friggin' clue what you're doing...." He replied by saying something to the effect of, " I make up my own scales/ I play whatever feels good to me/ it's MY interpretation of so and so's famous jazz piece...." At that point, I realized that I may have been right, he wanted to be known as a black shredder and he was gonna accomplish that even if it meant playing nonsensical speed runs.
Of course, he apparently has some education and has played with some top notch jazz bros. I haven't listened much to him in the last 15 years but I'm sure he knows what he's doing now.
Lenny Kravitz...true rockstar, great songwriter, he's the total package when it comes to being a popular musician....immensely talented, got the look and the vibe, but unfortunately his chops are pretty weak. His lead work can get a bit pitchy too, ever notice that? I dig him though.
But you know who is one badass guitar player? Kevin waht's his name from Leno! That guy is VERSATILE as hell and can shred the crap out of a guitar. His acoustic stuff is badass too.
Shame anyone who is black and plays rock guitar has to live under the Jimi wannabee thing. I've always just looked at Kravitz as a dude who played guitar (somewhat) and got chicks (a lot). Which is what he does. He's just another dude in a long line of dudes.
Jimi is so long gone he shouldn't be a comparision really. Shame people are like that. I'm just pleased the guy is turning young blacks on (hopefully) to cool rock guitar and is playing classic rock stuff and isn't rapping with Puff Daddy...

I got the new Lenny CD, and unfortunately, am not real impressed with it. Maybe I need to listen to it a few more times. Lenny is a BAMF though. If he endorsed plastic mickey mouse guitars, people would buy them. However, I can't see him straying from the vintage rock machines (V's, strats, etc.)

I don't know about him not straying from Vintage Rock. He is a huge Line 6 guy in fact gave them some of his vintage Fender amps for Line 6 to do their modeling. Anyway he should not be compared to Hendrix he doesn't have the chops but he is a decent musician. He is all rock star though. It ain't over was a good R & B type jam too. The song he did with slash was killer (Slash is just as Black as Lenny but he is never considred black go figure)
I keep the bible in a pool of blood

Face it, there's not a lot of room for a black rock guitar hero who isn't trying to be the Second Coming of Hendrix. The ones that tried to have a career in rock guitar and NOT be pushed into Hendrix' shoes had to go for full-on shred (Greg Howe), or some Funkadelic/Alternative like SpaceyT so they wouldn't be hounded to death about "carrying Hendrix' Torch" or some other media-generated bullsh1t.

That's a sad comment on the industry. I really dig Vernon Reid and I thought he wasn't a Hendrix clone per se. I also wish that Eric Gales had gotten a better push when he started but I think he had some substance abuse troubles. Still, he's a great player, too. And I think Tony Macalpine is heckuva musician, too - he kills on guitar and keys.
But you know who is one badass guitar player? Kevin waht's his name from Leno! That guy is VERSATILE as hell and can shred the crap out of a guitar. His acoustic stuff is badass too.

I mostly watch The Tonight Show JUST for Kevin Eubanks. Anybody know what that guitar is that he rips on the show? I think he doesn't even use a guitar pick to attack his axe with!

Good post Clev..When I was young I refused to play Hendrix tunes in public... I just got tired of hearing about it. In fact, I didn't play any in any band I was in until college, and even then we did the 'Chili Peppers version of Fire! That really raised some eyebrows!
It is good to see another black musician playing what he loves, not what some A&R guy says will sell in his 'community'. I prefer to look at music as having no color at all. Listen to what you like, play what inspires you, and all is good.
Someone mentioned Eric Gales !! Wow, what an AWESOME player he was/is. And as far as Vernon Reid goes, I love his playing, but admit that he's not for everyone. I never saw him as much of a 'shredder' though...that was more Macalpine's territory....
Vernon Reid wrote some great stuff, but solowise he reminds me of Vinnie Vincent as far as playing something fast and non-melodic. MacAlpine and Howe are monster players and Eubanks has really improved his rock-style stuff since taking over as Leno's bandleader.
A guy who should've got some good spin but didn't was Lloyd Grant, who played on the first Metallica demo. I jammed with him at a
couple of parties and that guy was pretty damn good! It's a shame he didn't gain more fame than he did.
