• Anime - sometimes even a fan has to say WTF?!?

Ok, I consider myself a fan of Anime and I can accept some of the more "out there" plots and storylines, but these just seem a bit TOO far out there
These are from an Ebay Seller listing (he's also got a 2-hum import Dinky I'm watching), BTW, not stuff I have sitting around

"THOSE WHO HUNT ELVES follows the adventures of three Japanese travelers, Junpei, a muscle head, Airi, a talented actress, and Ritsuko, a beautiful young munitions specialist, who become trapped in a bizarre fantasy world. Desperate to leave, they enlist the help of sorceress who prepares a spell that will take them back to Japan. However, as she is about to recite it, Junpei distracts her, making her botch the spell and send it flying to five different corners of the universe where it has attached itself to five different elven maidens. So, these three intrepid travelers must now seek out elven maidens and induce them to strip so that they might reassemble the spell that will take them home"

Seriously, now. "Duuuhhh you mean we gonna go home Lootennant Dan?" "Shut up Gump!" "OH DAMN! You made me lose my place and now you have to go find these OTHER Fantasyland Princesses and convince them to get nekkid before you can really go home!"

La Blue Girl had a better plot

"The Devil Lady: Go Nagai's classic horror series revolves around Jun, a fashion model who is unaware that she possesses a demonic power that will thrust her into the role of guardian of the Earth. When a mysterious figure plunges her into her first conflict with the supernatural forces of evil, Jun's jet-setting lifestyle quickly comes to an end. Gradually realizing the depth of the demonic power she possesses, Jun struggles to fulfill her modeling duties by day and her role as the Demon Lady by night."
Now that's gotta be a pain in the ass - "Hmmm, do I save the City from yet another horrible fate or do I prep for the Versace show?"
Picture Cindy Crawford in that role - "Cindy, you're late for the Pepsi shoot" "ExCUUUSE ME! I'm trying to save the fukking WORLD - IF. YOU. DON'T. MIND!!"

"Set in a mystic city ruled by the Emperor Valhiss, AMON SAGA is the story of a young man's quest to avenge the murder of his mother. Amon, a young swordsman, is led to the castle of the Emperor Valhiss in his quest, and finds that he must join the Imperial Army before he can exact his revenge. However, once he has worked his way into the castle, Amon meets Princess Lichia, whom the Emperor is holding ransom for a map. Caught between his quest for revenge and the peril that both the Princess and the city face from the Emperor's crimes, Amon must decide whether to help the living or honor the dead."
What, he gets only ONE of those TWO options? "Lessee, do I save the hot honey with the money, OR kill the mother fukker who fukked my mother?"
Dude, seriously, either way they're going to be hunting your ass until Doomsday - decap the Evil Dood and then snatch the Royal Snatchess, become King, and order the relentless carpet-bombing of the Evil Dood's Evil Empire

Here's a few I wouldn't mind seeing, however:

"The popular, surreal, and addicting LAIN series is collected in this special box set. Similar in scope to EVANGELION and KEY THE METAL IDOL, LAIN is a unique experience that is unabashedly much more bizarre than those groundbreaking and ambitious animes. The day after a classmate commits suicide, Lain, a 13-year-old girl, receives an e-mail from the dead girl: "I just abandoned my body. I still live here." Iain then begins to learn that there is an inexplicable link between the tactile world around us and the wired world, the strange virtual universe inside the computer."
Makes sense to me, even if Evangelion didn't Interesting premise, though - Ghost In The Machine and all that.

"COWBOY BEBOP began in 1994 as a 26 episode television series in Japan directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and created by many of the same artists responsible for the MACROSS PLUS OVA. The result was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows ever, and its popularity has been steadily growing since its debut. COWBOY BEBOP is the story of Spike and Jet, two of the galaxy's best bounty hunters who travel the spaceways in their converted fishing ship, the Bebop, and, along with help from the beautiful Faye Valentine, the brilliant Ed, and their data dog Ein, try to track down as many of the universe's wanted criminals as they can. Intelligent, witty, and visually stunning, COWBOY BEBOP is a landmark anime series. This special two disc collection contains six of the series' best episodes."
Given that Macross Plus is one of my ALL TIME favorite series, this might actually be worth watching, though I'd get the entire series instead of this particular collection.

"This incarnation of the popular BUBBLEGUM CRISIS series is the television show that aired in Japan in 1998 and 1999. It is a re-telling of the original eight part series, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS, an OAV that aired in Japan from 1986 to 1989. Running 26 episodes, this series expands on the original while staying with the same main characters as well as the original premise, that of four young women in giant robotic suits doing battle with the destructive androids and evil corporations of Megalo City (Mega Tokyo in the original series). Contains the entire series in a collector's box."
Who can resist chicks in giant robot suits? Not me
Hey, I know you guys that are laughing were big TransFormer fans, and wish your car could change into a giant robot - same damn thing

After working at a store that sold Anime and Japanese exports I don't really wanna watch that much anime. My boss was a f*cking b1tch, and she took all the fun out of anime for me. I'm sure I'll get back into it eventually.

I'm to busy with school and crap right now anyways.

I am by no means a fan of anime and find most of it unwatchable, but someone told me I had to give Cowboy Bebop a chance, so I did. My wife & I taped a few episodes (it's on Cartoon Network at 12:30 or 1AM on Sat) and we've really liked most of it. The animation is far and away better than most, & the plots are well thought out & pretty cool. It can get a little goofy & the music can get pretty cheesy at times, but over all I've gotta say it's good stuff. Did you ever watch Aeon Flux when they used to show it on MTV around '90-'92? I don't know if that qualifies as anime, but Bebop reminds me of it a little. Speaking of Aeon Flux, I just heard that they're working on a live-action movie with Charlize Theron in the lead. It's probably gonna suck, but if they dress her like the girl in the cartoon, I'm there!

Holy crap, Newc. If you hadn't specified that this is anime I would have thought you were baked for sure.

This is totally new stuff to me- Captain Beebop, Bubblegum something, Demon Model Sorcereses... hmmm.
I know nothing about anime other than Yugi-oh or whatever oh it is. And Speed Racer. I used to watch that.

I bet chatting over a cuppa coffee with you is interesting.

Re: Anime - sometimes even a fan has to say WTF?!?

DG - Macross Plus is like that - easy to get into and follow, but not too shallow or overly deep - it revolves around a handful of characters and how they interact with each other, with really only minor dramatic yawners The soundtrack is a best-seller, though.
Aeon Flux was good when she was getting killed in every episode and there was no dialog, but when they started letting MTV get away with basically Cartoon Porn, added plots and dialogs, and all the other crap, I thought it sucked - too much of a good thing?
Anyway, I didn't really like the character designs - entirely too spidery for me.

Em - Speed Racer, Thundercats, and TransFormers are all considered Anime. I haven't seen Yu-Gi-Oh or the other collectible-card-game-based shows (Pokermon, Digimon, etc etc). I tried watching Dragon Ball Z a couple of times on the Cartoon Network, but thought they spent more time showing what a candyass the main hero was and far too much time yakking about nothing than actually doing something.
Ranma 1/2 was funny at times, though again it shifted from being too childish to trying to be too mature (episodes with 80% dialog and only 20% motion, etc)

MM - Of those I have or have seen:
-Blue Seed
-Evangelion (whole series and both movies)
-Fist Of The North Star (have you ever seen the live action version with Christopher Penn? It SUCKS!)
-Ghost In The Shell (first movie, no series or other movies)

But I've heard of most of the others in that list. I do own these:
-Akira
-Ninja Scroll
-Macross Plus series and Movie
-Macross II series
-Giant Robo
-Vampire Hunter D (first one, not Bloodlust)
-Wings of Honneamise (another good one, but kinda long)
-Angel Cop episode 3
-Dominion: Tank Police (series or movie, I forget)
-New Dominion Tank Police (1st Ep)
-Armitage III
-G.I.T.S.
-Dirty Pair: Project Eden and Flight 005 Conspiracy
-La Blue Girl (complete set on DVD - sold to a friend who owned a video store and wanted to keep them out front in defiance of the local public decency laws and somebody stole them )
-They Were 11
-Iczer One (Ep 1 I think)
-Odin (Starship Odin or something like that?)
-Robot Carnival
-NeoTokyo
-Doomed Megalopolis (saw a couple of eps)
-Demon City Shinjuku
-Revenge of the Ninja Warrior (kinda weak)
-Project: A-Ko series (including Battles)
-Robotech (saw almost the entire series when it was on a few years ago)
-Rupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy (had it for 3 years, never watched it )
-Dragon Knight ("Chivalry is dead. Meet the man who killed it" )
-Dragon Pink (edited version )
-Legend Of Black Heaven
-Lily C.A.T.
-Various others that were shown on the Sci-Fi Channel's Anime-thons.
-Zillion (seen a few episodes of the series)

I'm sure there's more but I can't seem to find any more around here and it's been a while since I've watched any that I do have. Last one I saw was Neon Genesis Evangelion series and Black Heaven (thanks to Illumina )
I thought the main characters (heroes) in NGE were useless - 3 kids with severe emotional issues piloting giant robots that are also our only hope for the future, and we all die anyway Too late for Plan B I guess
Black Heaven was just funny - Heavy Metal saves the Universe

Hentai would be ok if they would try to be serious about it without being ridiculously comedic, overly dramatic, sickeningly perverted, or philosophical - it's porn; screw and go home, don't obsess that you're not going to find a cure for world hunger by simply screwing, and don't interrupt the moment with a slapstick routine or a bloody massacre
But I'm wierd that way - when I watch a comedy, I want to laugh; when I watch a drama, I want to think; when I watch porn, I want a woody

Em - Chatting over a cup of coffe with me would probably be very interesting, considering your sig is from my favorite comedy troupe - Monty Python's Flying Circus is DEFINTELY on my DVD Boxed Set list. I've already got the Holy Grail Collector's DVD and Life Of Brian, I just need Meaning Of Life, Yellowbeard, And Nor For Something Completely Different, and The Secret Policeman's Ball (and Other Ball) (live shows) and I'll be set for life

The Secret Policeman's Ball and The Secret Policeman's Other Ball are live shows they did - basically Flying Circus on tour.

I've also got one of their albums - Contractual Obligations - that has skits I've not seen in Flying Circus, such as a "Being Eaten By A Crocodile" Olympic Event; Bookshop, where a man asks a bookshop owner for various books that either don't exist (30 Days In The Samarkhan Desert With The Duchess Of Kent by A.E.J. Elliot, O.B.E.) or ones that are spoofs of real books (A Sale Of Two Titties by Charles Dikkens, the well-known Dutch author ) and a few others, and some songs.

The Sep. issue of Wired has a pretty good article about 3 of the "Giants of Anime" and their upcoming U.S. releases. I wasn't even going to read it until this thread got me interested. I usually don't read Wired articles about entertainment-related stuff, since they seem to think Moby is the greatest musician of our time. The article gives some background on Oshii, who did Ghost in the Shell, Miyazaki (Spirited Away, which won the Oscar for animated film last year), and Otomo (Akira), and previews their new movies. They all sound pretty cool. Oshii's Ghost 2: Innocence is "like its predecessor, featuring robot sex murders, hyper-literate cyborgs, and an elliptical narrative that twists on itself like an Escher drawing." Dude, you had me at "robot sex murders." Otomo's is called Steamboy, and is retro-futuristic with all sorts of wild steam-powered tech. Miyazaki's is called Howl's Moving Castle and is about a girl who flees a curse by hiding in a giant mechanical castle. Not sure about that one, but the artwork looked pretty good. All three will supposedly be in wide release in theaters because they are being pushed by Sony, Dreamworks, & Disney. So I guess anime is exactly like every other form of entertainment : there is a ton of complete crap and some really great stuff if you look for it, & usually the crap somehow becomes the most popular.

I just don't get it. I wish I did because I do like art, but all I see is cartoons.
