Ever since inner city Busing to segregate schools to make them "diverse" was the beginning of the end to a quality education ..1973 was the year.
This was an absolute political move with politics being the priority , but not in the best interest for education..
It did not raise the bar for a better education . Instead it pulled everying down to one sub level....dumbing down so to speak.
You can huff and puff and frown all you want ...but this is complete fact!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!
"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.
Bill, You hit on a point for me in this thread. you said to the effect that kids with musical talent got bored in band class and dont take it seriously. Well thats exactly what happened with me. I started in band in 4th grade. played saxaphone. It was "ok", I showed talent and my folks bought me a sax. I went on till 8th grade, but I peaked musically at about 6th grade. To me, reading music was so sterile and unfeeling. I just put in my time and was bored with it ,my grade started to drop and the teacher took an attitude with me. So I said **** it, I quit band and took up art the next year and I picked up a guitar and started learning on my own. My folks were amazed at the progress I showed and supported my efforts in guitar. I advanced more musically in 6 months on that guitar teaching myself than I did in 4 years of playing saxaphone in school band.
I agree that the education system in this country is very sad, very very sad. I will probably raise some issues with this, as far as music education, you can thank all those f***ing has been or never was jocks that end up in school administration pushing the athletic programs and shitting on the music programs. DGMW, nothing against athletics, but they shouldnt put music down and shove it under the doormat just because some has been jock wants all the available funds to go to sports. sorry, but seeing music education in such a sad state makes me angry. I would have loved to had a better opportunity in school music.
Agreed. Too much emphasis is placed on sports and getting drafted into the Majors out of High School and compeltely by-passing College, while those with brains and talent in more important fields have to take it up the ass and fight tooth and nail for the "one-in-a-million" scholarship to go to college, but the jocks are handed a free ride.
And no, it's not "my" fault public schools have turned out that way, it's those who marched on Washington and the local school districts saying that requiring kids to know what 2+2= is racist and elitist and is the rich white man comin down on the poor and downtrodden. The ones that said not allowing their kids to goof off in class or skip class to work on their jump shot or right hook and still get a passing grade was a sign that this nation is returning to the age of slavery.
It's because of people forcing their personal beliefs down each other's throats and saying that kids can do no wrong so everything they do - including turning in a pile of sh1t as homework - should be received with glowing praise to increase their self-esteem and make them feel good about themselves as they shirk their responsibilities.
And before someone from the ACLU gets their balls in a knot, I've seen white people doing the same things, so don't pull a cop-out and call me a racist. Lazy is lazy, whether it's black or white, and laziness is the problem, not lazy white vs lazy black ratios.

ROCK ON NEWC!!!!! Tell it like it is man!!!
I got issues with jocks. More than musical. I was also very active in a club in high school called Vocational Industrial Clubs of America(VICA) and I competed at the state level in several areas, Computer assisted drafting, theme display, and extemporaneous speaking(bull$hitting). And our damn school board cut ALL our funding(as well as some other NON athletic programs) so the sports teams could go on as normal. We revolted! All officers of VICA got on the agenda for the next school board meeting, we all showed up wearing suits. We spoke our case at the meeting in a logical, rational, and professional fashion and the school board CUT the athletic programs funding to spread it EQUALLY to ALL extra currricular activities let me tell you, were WE popular with all the jocks at school the next day when the news broke. Kids in other activites like OM, youth in gov, etc....loved us. We had the ball$ to stand up to the jocks and the system. there were teachers and parents who realy got on our case about it and politley told them to **** OFF!!!
RIGHT is RIGHT!!! WE had just as must right to school funds as the F***ing jocks did.
I hate the mentality that weak minded people that can run fast or jump high get opportunities that other people dont get.
So newc, you need a running mate when you run for political office?
Some public schools are fine, others suck. Depends on the area. I live in Rockwall TX. and my boys go to school in the public school system. We have a great system here and there have been kids who left private school, came into this system and got held back because they were way behind. Private schools, just because you are paying for it does not mean your child receives the best education. Private schools can be just as bad as the worst public system.
I think the people are partly to blame for how bad it can be. We can not afford to not afford tax dollars for education, you pay for it now or pay for later. Our tax base is not high by any means but our system finds other ways to improve things, by volunteers, fund raisers, donations of school supplies and whatnot. Hell my wife spends more time at my sons school I think they should be paying her
Whether your kids are in a public or private school system, parents need to be in the loop, check their kids work, their books, their study guides and check the teachers work too. I'm not one to shy away from writing a note to the teacher telling them when they are wrong on certain things. My wife volunteers so much she has no problem talking to them about it. Do not think just because you write a hefty check for your kids education that they are in fact receiving a quality education. Just because you write a check or don't write a check, you still have to be involved with you kids education. Don't put it all on the school systems, be involved in the whole process.... education comes from parents too.
Man, I LOVE how *real* the JCF can be at times!!!
