I have a Richie Kotzen RHS instructional video that almost made me want to quit playing guitar after seeing what Richie can do with one. He is a monster of a player.

Steve Morse, absolute master of the instrument but he's spent his entire career below the radar.

Jake E. Lee? In terms of Ozzys guitarist yes, Jake is underrated compared to Randy and Zakk. Most underrated guitarist no definately not. He was on several magazine covers in the mid 80s. He even had his own article in, I think it was guitar magazine during the early 90s. The Japanese must have thought he was a god, look at how many young guitar mags from Japan featuring Jake pop up on ebay.

Unlike "Ry Cooder ( best slide player I have ever heard)
Chuck Berry (without Chuck we probably wouldn't have had Hendrix)
Dick Dale (the original shredder)
Lindsey Buckinham (always overlooked on these list)
Brian May
Billy Gibbons" ?

This whole thread seems to be a list of people's favourites rather than of truly underated guitarists. A lot of the guitarists listed here have already attained legendary status, so could hardly be called "underated". Some may be less well known amongst the general public but are held in very high regard amongst guitarists, while others maybe dismissed by us metalheads but are household names to fans the rest of the world over.

And just about every guitarist mentioned in this thread has been discussed at some time on the JCF before, usually receiving praise from those into them, so it's not like this thread has brought any new or surprising names to the table. A lot of folks here have praised Buckinghams playing, and Roy Buchanan's, Gillis', Kotzen's, Vandenberg's, Stevens', Oliva's, etc.

I mean, really? How many covers have guys like Billy Gibbons, Ry Cooder, Brian May, Richie Blackmore, Dave Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Nuno Bettencourt, Jake E Lee been on over the years? I couldn't consider any of these guys underated.

Criss Oliva Always took a moment to talk. Wow, What an awesome dude. Major loss in my life to see him go.

Andy Larocque Also a VERY Nice Guy, one of my favs.

Tony MacAlpine - SUPER nice and friendly guy and awesome player.

Vinnie Moore - I really enjoy him a lot, first CD especially. We didn't hit it off very well when we met. Bummed me out.

here's a few "forgotten" greats...neal schon, alex lifeson,
and rik emmett. as far as current underated guitarist kyle cook would get my vote...i know he's from a pop rock band but the guy has some chops when they let him go off.

I also consider Chris Oliva and Tony McAlpine to be underated!

I hate getting into threads late BUT................

Eddie Van Halen is the most underated player EVER.

Everyone who plays guitar should be bowing down to him every morning, he doesn't get 10% of the recanigtion that fuckkin Ace does.

That was Roger Waters's DVD.
I got confused when I was tryping it..
Doyle played great on that DVD.
