Re: MOST UNDERATED GTREST!

People don't say about Eddie: "He can't play?". But people say this about Ace. C'mon, Eddie was the 80's Jimi Hendrix. And I don't agree that Ace really influenced most of guitarists. There were three Gods: Jimi Hendrix (I don't worship him for some reason) - he taught them that playing fast is cool; Jimmy Page - he taught them that playing heavy is cool; Rithcie Blackmore - he's the first shredder. Then Eddie came, borrowed everything from those three and added loads more and became THE icon. And where was Ace? What innovations did he bring?

Re: MOST UNDERATED GTREST!

I think its a matter of perspective. As much as I love Ritchie Blackmore, I wouldnt call him the first shredder.
Nokie Edwards is the guy that made electric guitar cool. He was really the first guy to just play leads with no vocals in a rock environment in a big way. Depending on your perspective you could say that guys even earlier in classical and jazz were the first shredders. As far a gods, that too is perspective. I dont regard Eddie, Page or Hendrix as being even close to gods. I would say Ace is even closer. But then that is my perspective. As for Ace bringing innovation, what is innovation? Even a guy like Eddie who was innovative with tapping, its not a really big deal. There was tapping long before there was Eddie, and it quickly died after it became cool. To me, both Eddie and Ace are gods in one sence, they are brain dead alcoholic act like asses gods.........
Every time I hear people question Ace, remember he influenced more people to pick up the guitar than anyone in history. I'd say Tony Iommi is far more influencial than Ritchie or Jimi, even though as Ozzy once said, "Tony couldnt even produce a fart."............Again perspective.........

Re: MOST UNDERATED GTREST!

Ace was who made me want to start playing. When I heard/saw Kiss, it was over, I was 10 yrs old and my parents were gracious enought to buy me a nice guitar and pay for lessons. But it was all about Ace Frehley. Some of his licks are timeless and brilliant in their own right.

Here's my list ov underated guitarists or those who don't get the recognition they desrve:

Steve Lukather- he can play anything, at anytime, any style, on any guitar and do it better than almost anyone. The guy flat out kills.

Brad Gillis- one of the best tremolo users I've ever heard; much better than Vai in using the trem to create melodies. Gillis is also one of my favorites.

Jeff Watson- another Night Ranger player. The guy does a lot of recording for other people and is probably one of the best tappers ever. 8 fingers, not a problem.

Yngwie- before i get ripped on for even suggesting he's overrated, think of how often people say he plays the same thing over and over....nothing but speed....etc. He can do some incredible stuff and sometimes I think people don't realize how good he really is.

Adrian Vandenberg- already mentioned but worth it again. Writes beautiful, melodic solos, and you can always tell his vibrato. One of the top 5 players of the 80s rock scene.

Reb Beach - His post Winger career is proof of that.

The aforementioned Vito Bratta as well. He did Eddie better than Eddie himself...

Re: MOST UNDERATED GTREST!

You can't say Eddie is "underrated" at all ....he wore his crown for a close to a decade...

Uli ....he is the most underated and least talked about of all time.

second to Frank Marino.

Then Magnuss Karlsson and Olaf Lenk ...two of the best new guitarist this decade.

everyone is mentioning guitarist that we all know ...YJM , Chriss Oliva , Gary Moore , Zakk ...Randy ..Jake...yada yada.

what about better guitarist that most of you don't know .

You have to know >>all<< the players before making this judgement.

Being a drummer, this probably won't hold as much weight as the rest of you... I was glad to see my bandmate Tom mention Brad Gillis. We were going over some new songs to learn last night at rehearsal and Tom and I have been jonesin' to get Still Rock in America on the set list board. We were all listening to the tune and my jaw still drops when the solo kicks in. One of my all time faves for sure. I'm also glad Bill mentioned Uli and Frank, two more that are at the top of the heap..

Re: MOST UNDERATED GTREST!

I made a "best guitarist in the world" list a while ago on the old board ..I'm sure I forgot a few here and there but they're mostly all mentioned..

I'm going to highjack this mutha just to get this topic on track ...OK we are talking about "underratted" players ...how could one be "underrated" when they are amoung the main players such as everyone that is mentioned thus far.

Certainly Ed , YJM , Randy , Jake , Stevens , Hendrix , Lynch , Macalpine and ect..could never be percieved underrated they are well established , top shelf mainstays...who recieved much coverage in most guitar rags and even on the covers thru the years..am I right?

OK I would say this thread is for those poor dudes and Gals (Jeniffer Batten) who has busted ass for years at their craft virtualy unrecognized by the majority .

I am one the minority along with several others here who have a vast awareness and knowledge of much lesser known players of all styles that possess great musical prowess.

to judge this fairly you must involve "ALL" the players in the game such as.

Uli , Frank Marino , John Sykes , Michael Lee Firkins , Blues Saraceno , Steve Lynch , Harry Cody , Olaf Lenk , Magnus Karlsson , Mike Romeo , Damir Uzunovic , Jarzombek , Tore Otsby , Chris Broderick , Jeff Loomis , Glen Drover , Jeff Waters , Mark Macgee , Joey Tafolla , Gus G. , Tommy Veterlli , Greg Howe , Andre Corbin , Magnus Nilsson , Victor Smolski , Tony Fredianelli , Ralph Santolla , Roy Z , Michael Batio , Alex Masi , James Byrd and 100s perhaps 1000s of others..

These guys can pretty much smoke all that's mentioned so far (IMO) and has and NEVER NEVER been on a GW cover or even mentioned in their BS popularity contest "teen beet" BS guitar mag or Rolling Stone popularity contest polls..but Alexi finaly got his only due to his new found popularity ...so there you go.

Just like my thoughts on religion I got to know both and all sides as much as possible before taking a stance.

What I'm saying is that "popularity" does not mean the same thing as "talent" or "best"..very different meanings to very different words.

The same theory could apply to politics , arts , religion or just about anything you could possibly poll or imagine....

and since music falls in the art catagory the perception of greatness is very subjective by the listener.

BTW , I just nicked my sack earlier...there a piece of toilet paper stuck to it to control the blood loss.

So let's try to focus un those who woodshedded many years and hardly gets any mention...like Brednt Allman or Mike Wead.

Al DiMeola is very established ...I think everyone here knows that he is truly great ...therefore the term "underrated" should not apply.

Fong do you really want me to name the top thousand best guitarist in the world ..Al would be amoung them ..

Yeah, I agree that it is the matter of perspective. We have different ones, no big deal. And by the word shredder I meant the classical influences in music, not the speed etc. People nowadays say shred and don't even mean half of what it really is.
I saw Smolski on your list. Haven't heard him, but I just have to, cuz we're from the same country. What style does he play?

Chase he is the guitarist for Rage a very established melodic german power / thrash metal band...they've been around for about twenty years...he also has a solo out.

and what about players such as Roland Grapow another player that has established himself for years that he is one of the greats but he's another who's never mentioned.

Frank Gambale , Shawn Lane ,

I believe the phrase "never mentioned" is basically synonymous with "underrated"..meaning their abilities far exceed their fame....."underrated".

It's much easier for me to do a list of overated players to be honest.

I'm covinced that the three gods are ...as far as the most influential would be Jimi , Ed and Yngwie ...they brought their styles to the masses of copycats like no other....not even Randy or Page.

More people were influenced by these three more than any other guitarist....each one changed guitar forever ....so who's next?...time will tell.
