I live in the DC area, and (in all seriousness) I predict they are going to be named the "Washington Grays"--in tribute to the Homestead Grays of the old Negro League, who were a very successful team that played in DC. The DC mayor still has to get the stadium-funding measure through the City Council, and I predict that the Grays name will be used as a lure for some of the race-obsessed members of the Council who are currently opposed to the stadium proposal on the grounds that it won't help the poor. And I bet it will work.

Anyway, the Senators were one of the worst major league teams--why resurrect that name?

I don't think the "Grays" would be PC in DC. All that brings to mind is the Confederacy. It may mean a lot locally, but nationwide I think it doesn't work. Do they still call the bowl game :The Blue-Gray Bowl? [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

The DC mayor has already publicly stated that he favors the Grays name. Ultimately, the new team owner--who probably won't get control of the team until early next year--will decide the name in consultation with MLB. There are a lot of factors that go into it: tradition, marketability, trademark issues, political correctness, etc. Even though I don't think it's the best move, it may be that the new ownership will conclude they can sell the Senators name more easily than the Grays--although taking on the Grays name would allow them to tap into the market for Negro Leagues apparel and memorabilia, which is stronger than you might think.

Interestingly, there is a PC argument against using the Senators name: DC doesn't have any senators of its own, and all of the "home rule" activists in DC are already making a big fuss about it. As far as PC stuff over the 'Grays' name, you are the first person I've seen make a Civil War connection. That fact that the name was used for a Negro Leagues team probably insulates it from problems with the NAACP or any of the other PC Police out there.

The third name that has come up in serious discussions is the Nationals. The Senators were actually known as the Nationals during their heyday in the '20s-early '30s. But who wants to root for a team whose nickname is inevitably shortened to the "Nats"?

Since I work in downtown DC, I think the team should be called the "Washington Power Lawyers"--doesn't *that* get you fired up for some baseball! [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Yea, That's way too close. I can see a very negative play on words with the nickname "Nats". I kinda like the "Washington Power Mowers". I can't believe I'm the only person to pick up on the Rebel gray. I'm either a genius or dumb as a mini-ball. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
