• most STUPID thing you ever did during a gig?

ok, everybody with some gig experience must know what I am talking about when I ask this; something you were laughed at because you did it, something only you thought was stupid (anything else from being drunk ) etc.

let's share some things, I'll do the kickoff

ok, during my last gig I had my cellphone in my pocket. it was still turned on, because I was expecting a phonecall before the gig of a couple of friends of mine who were about to come, but were lost. I forgot to turn it off when we started. After 15 minutes of playing it happened: someone called me on my mobile and I was really concearned that the magnetic fields the phone creates in such event would be audible through the PU's into the amp and giving some stupid sounds (like when you have your phone near a speaker, which gives some fukking noize), so I quit playing during that song (we have 2 guitar players), picked the phone out of my pocket (and it were my lost friends by the way) and gave it to my sister who was next to the stage. the entire audience laughed their asses off (and not without reason) and I saw the stupidity of the act as well and had quite a good time while laughing MY ass of as well...

I'd say: top that

Most stupid thing I ever did:

I allowed someone to move my 2x12 combo tube amp from point a to point b as we were walking out on stage.....
Talk about Thunderous Applause.....

Most Stupid thing the other guitarist did in my band:

He allowed someone to play with his guitar 5 minutes before going on stage during the same show..... Needless to say, his six string electric came in a half step out of tune after my 12 intro for White Lions' Wait back in '88..... His solo didn't get any better.

After seeing Yngwie slide his strat across the stage on its stings and hearing it, I thought how cool. Having the infinite wisdom of an 18 year old I neglected to tell anyone else in my band what I was going to do. At our next gig as we were finishing the first set I swung my Aria off laid her down and sent her sliding. Sounded cool as hell, but right as it got to the singer he was looking out into the crowd he stepped down onto the guitar cord unplugging the guitar and sending it into a wicked tail spin off the front of the stage. My poor Aria was scratched all over, around the bottom of the guitar the paint had shattered off from the inpact with the concrete floor. 20 years later I refuse to abuse any of my guitars like that.

Oh, I don't know.....Maybe packing a 1/2 gram of yao up my nose....Then start jonesing onstage before our 1-hour set was up ...I'm glad those days are over and long gone!!
In the late 1980's we used to tour in the midwest... We would play at Mcguffy's House of Draft in Dayton OH.
Great bar, the ladies were friendly. I had some "fun" with several of them. One night the girl that I was living with back in STL decided to surprise me and walked through the door and sat at a table next to the "Fun girls". I bet you know what the topic of discussion was. Needless to say, I became a homeless musician after that weekend.

Re: most STUPID thing you ever did during a gig?

In New Orleans I was so drunk I almost fell over doing a MIDI switch. In San Fransisco I just about blugeoned the piss out of some dude for charging the stage. I usually just shove people back into the pit if they get to close. but this dude like kicked and stepped on the security guards to get across the barricade, then he was charging straight for the drummer. I caught him and when he started fighting me I was about to throttle the crap out of him, but one of the guys in the band pulled me off and said no, so I let him go. He ended up damn near knockin the drumset over, and stole the bass player's favorite tambourine.

I also had a rig go down on me in front of 40,000 people at Coachella, but that wasn't really stupid, it just happens.

I'll probably think of more.

Oh, wait. I fuked up and made a mistake in front 2 of the VP's at Capitol Records, the producer for blink182/AFI/Green Day, and about a million other industry big-wigs. It was a small mistake, but they sure noticed.

you sound like you did some crazy crap, ace. you messed up in front of jerry finn? what did you do? (by the way, this is in no way like insulting you or anything, i'm just curious). i'm sure i messed up at my last serious gig, but thats because we didn;t have a cut off time, and this chick comea around, and tells the drummer only that we were supposed to stop. so i had a 5 second impromptu chord "solo". that was about it. maybe the piece sucked? it was all improv, so who cares, lol.

Re: most STUPID thing you ever did during a gig?

I was the only guitarist in the band and I forgot I was using a cord one night. I appropriately stepped on it, and unplugged it, in front of a whole lot of people, on the first song of set, just as the rest of the band joined me on the tune.

We were opening with "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" that night, and the first notes of the tune inspired a lot of people to come rushing from the bar room up to the stage, just in time for me to go silent... Something hard about looking down and picking up your cord and sheepishly plugging it back in while being watched by a lot of people...

Yeah, that was real good...

Another time, when I was doing bar covers in the same band even, we were pretty drunk one night and doing a ZZ-Top tune. Well, the band was doing one ZZ song, and I was somehow playing another, yet they fit so well together, it was un-noticable for some time to me. I noticed this somewhere about halfway through the song.

I was wondering about the stares from the band and some of the audience... Sigh...

Trust me, I know what I'm doing... Umm, yeah... Sure do...

I remember once, we had this bass player that had been running around one night doing his best Steve Harris moves, jumping from monitor to monitor, and he finally lost his wireless transmitter out of his pocket, and he swung it around and it exploded into pieces on the monitor speaker making a REALLY loud buzz and squeal into the PA, yet he was not noticing it yet. We then pointed it out to him, and got him a cord... Well, a few minutes later, good old "stevey" came flying up to the front of the stage for a jump onto the monitors and yanked his GK bass head, quite violently, right off his cabs, smashing it to the ground breaking that as well... With even more noise...

Man, he was awesome...

I tried the throw the guitar around your neck thing.. like Yngwie and Alexi Laiho do often.. I ended it with a concusion (?) and a broken guitar haha (it was a crappy guitar anyway, not even mine.. it was from a guitar from the music school so no one really cared I broke it)

I has another bass player do that too! Having a longer neck than a guitar, his bass just came around and impaled itself straight into the ground snapping the headstock off though...

It would have been much better had he gave himself a concussion though...

I was playing drums in a band, and I decided to wear a pair of overalls with out a shirt on under to look cool and stuff, well the legs were so big that when I'd play my kick drum the pedel would get caught in the insdie of my legs, So I just ended up playing in my underwear, figued if tommy Lee does I should do it.

Well during many of my Virtual Halen gigs ..My friends were pouring massive amounts of Jager down my throat...I don't drink much..

well I drank like a fish when I played...but I puke everytime!

Well once in between tunes some girl comes up with some more shots for the band..I throw mine back and it just hovered in the back of my throat...it finally went down but I was starting do some serious dry heavin' and humpin' during Hot For Teacher...I tried everything to keep my composure...

Then some stupid girl standing by the stage , watching me ...knowing that I'm gonna blow chunks..comes up and says in front of all my peeps..

"I'm a nurses aid , here just throw up in my hands...I don't mind really...go ahead ...just go ahead" as she's holding her cupped hands out in front of me ...

I just couldn't ...I told her "No way" and "Go away" ...but she insisted ...I couldn't hold it anymore and puked all over her shoes and stage instead..

well I didn't want to get it all over my new shiny G & L bass!!!

BTW I never missd a beat of Hot for teacher...now that's dedication.

and once I made John's other guitairist (my old VH guitarist) fukk up on every song that they played one night...all I did was go up to him and "look" at him while he played and that just put some major heebie jeebies on his mo jo...it was awesome!!!!

John remembers that one!
